Eintracht Frankfurt continues to press ahead with its sustainability agenda.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s sustainability rating, which comprises the environmental, social and governance pillars, has risen to 77 points out of a possible 100 for the first time, underlining the club’s commitment to a sustainable future.

The Eagles laid the foundations for the continued improvement of the club’s sustainability performance in 2021, when it developed an industry-specific ESG tool and rating system. This data-driven approach is beginning to take effect – as the club’s strategic foundations begin to bear fruit, the focus is gradually turning towards the practical implementation of measures across 25 different areas. However, it is important to bear in mind that the club is operating in a field that requires balanced decisions to be made in order to safeguard competitiveness on the pitch and guarantee environmental, social and corporate responsibility.

ESG strategy taking effect: Progress in all areas

Since its first ESG rating in 2021, Eintracht Frankfurt has improved its score from 59 to 77 points. Above all, social projects in the areas of anti-discrimination and inclusion, the provision of a meeting point for fans at every home match and the strengthening of social engagement structures contributed to an improvement in the social pillar (81/100 points). The club’s governmental score (79/100) is also on the rise, with transparency and stability enhanced through a binding supplier code of conduct, clear responsibilities and improved communication on ESG issues.

The environmental pillar (71/100), though, remains a major challenge, with the high consumption of resources and matchday mobility still at odds with sporting competitiveness and environmental sustainability. Nevertheless, projects such as the installation of a photovoltaic system on the Deutsche Bank Park roof, the increased number of charging points and the promotion of a circular economy show that, under the circumstances, Eintracht Frankfurt is adopting the right measures.

PreZero collaboration enters next stage

Having achieved successful results in the area of waste management, the club’s partnership with leading full-service environmental company PreZero Germany is set to continue. The collaboration is turning its attention to water, with the aim to further develop resource conservation and water management at Eintracht locations, and to establish further solutions in line with a functioning circular economy.

“Our findings in the waste sector to date show how effective data-based sustainability measures can be,” said Magdalena Moyat, Head of ESG at Eintracht Frankfurt. “By focusing on water, we’re taking another step towards further reducing our ecological footprint.”

Looking forward: A commitment beyond the club

Eintracht Frankfurt will continue to be represented by Magdalena Moyat on the DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga’s Sustainability Commission for the next four years, enabling her to use her experience to continue to raise common standards. There will also be a greater focus on biodiversity and climate resilience, as well as on establishing local business and scientific partnerships. The first steps have already been taken in this area, thanks to the nature trail in the ‘Kletterwald’ (climbing forest) and the tree planting initiative in collaboration with the city of Frankfurt.

“Eintracht cannot save the world but as a club on the big international stage, it knows that it reaches a wide audience,” said Omid Nouripour, Vice-President of the German Bundestag and Chairman of Eintracht’s Sustainability Advisory Board. “Eintracht is therefore shouldering responsibility for a sustainable future. We’re promoting togetherness through innovative solutions and new partnerships, the impact of which reaches far beyond sport.”
