Fenerbahçe’s opening Suwen Süper Ligi weekend revealed something last season’s dominance often obscured — what happens when winning becomes difficult.

ABB FOMGET defended very deep at the Lefter Küçükandonyadis’ facilities, protecting the penalty area and daring the champions to break down a compact low block. For most of the game, it worked.

Fenerbahçe found little space centrally and had to wait until the 85th minute, when Zeynep Kerimoğlu headed in Andrea Stašková’s cross. Zsanett Kaján added a second in stoppage time.

The scoreline looked comfortable. However, the match was not.

A question of margins

As discussed in the season preview, the question was not simply if Fenerbahçe could dominate again, but whether last year marked the start of a more permanent hierarchy.

Their opening game suggested they may not need to reproduce last season’s margins to remain the benchmark. A team that wins against a plan built specifically to frustrate it is making a different statement from one that simply wins big.

Summer additions Kaján and Katie Bowen both started, while Kerimoğlu came from the bench to make the breakthrough. Kaján helped create the opener before scoring the second.

That depth may matter more than simply strengthening the first-choice 11. If more opponents defend deep and concede possession, Fenerbahçe will need different solutions.

FOMGET showed how to make the champions uncomfortable. They also showed how hard it is to turn that discomfort into points.

Challengers refuse to blink

Galatasaray and Trabzonspor produced a different kind of stalemate.

Their goalless draw was cagey and tactical, with both sides protecting their structure and reluctant to take the risks that might open the game.

It felt less like a shortage of attacking quality than two title contenders determined not to lose an early meeting. That caution benefited Fenerbahçe.

Three different clubs won the previous three league titles, leaving the competition without an established order. Galatasaray, Trabzonspor and FOMGET are among those trying to ensure Fenerbahçe’s dominant campaign remains an exception rather than a pattern.

Yet after one round, all three have already ceded ground. FOMGET frustrated the champions and lost, while Galatasaray and Trabzonspor neutralised each other. Fenerbahçe found a way to win.

A league only partly visible

Both title race fixtures were shown on the YouTube channel of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), the governing body for football in Türkiye, which plans to broadcast three Suwen Kadın Futbol Süper Ligi matches each weekend.

With eight fixtures in a full round, most of the league remains unavailable to watch.

Opening week coverage also centred on the major Istanbul clubs. Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray were shown at home, while Beşiktaş’s trip to Ünye completed the three broadcasts.

There is logic in prioritising clubs with the largest audiences. The streams averaged around 3,000 concurrent viewers — a reasonable starting point for federation coverage without a commercial broadcast partner.

But the more useful test is whether interest can extend beyond Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray and Beşiktaş. YouTube gives the league a shop window. At present, it is only showing part of the shop.

The first indication of the Süper Ligi season

One weekend cannot establish a new hierarchy, but it can reveal the pressures shaping one.

FOMGET showed that Fenerbahçe can be frustrated. Galatasaray and Trabzonspor showed how challengers can cede ground while trying not to lose it.

Meanwhile, Fenerbahçe showed something else. Even when the dominance disappears, the result does not necessarily disappear with it. That may be the more important warning for everyone trying to catch them.
