Sven Botman and Malick Thiaw are likely to be under consideration to replace Bruno Guimaraes as the next Newcastle United captain, according to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards.
The Brazilian midfielder is leaving the St James’ Park club for Arsenal, and new Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle is set to name the next Magpies’ skipper soon.
Botman and Thiaw have become much more forceful in their leadership of the group, and one of them is likely to be the next Toons captain.
Kieran Trippier was Newcastle’s vice-captain before leaving at the end of last season, while Dan Burn and Jacob Murphy were also part of the leadership group under Eddie Howe.
Murphy has continued his role in the dressing room, with the 31-year-old and Yoane Wissa both name-checked as playing a key role in helping the new signings settle in.
He could also come into consideration but is unlikely to be a regular starter under Jaissle and has been linked with a move away from Newcastle this summer.
Thiaw started 33 league games last term and ten times in the Champions League, while Botman started six Champions League games and 21 times in the Premier League.
The German defender could get the nod, but Burn could also be a perfect choice to replace Guimaraes as captain.
Some managers decide who their skipper will be, while some leave the dressing room to make the decision.
Guimaraes was a great leader for the Magpies on and off the pitch, exemplifying it all through the transfer saga.
