The mood among Swansea City fans is not great right now, with a heavy investment in Alan Sheehan's squad over the summer not reflecting the performances and results on the pitch.

The Swans have experienced a disappointing first third of the 2025/26 Championship season, and after a 4-1 hammering at the hands of Ipswich Town this past weekend, they have won just two of their last 11 league matches.

It has led to increased pressure being heaped upon manager Sheehan, who took over as Swansea boss on a permanent basis in February 2025. A key factor in the frustration surrounding the Welsh outfit’s season is due to the impressive summer of spending they enjoyed.

Looking to build on their 11th place finish from last term, operators such as Marko Stamenic, Manuel Benson and Ethan Galbraith were all acquired by Swansea, raising the level of their squad to a decent standard.

The biggest signing of the window was that of striker Adam Idah, who was purchased from Celtic in a deal that could rise to £7 million if all add-ons are met.

Adam Idah handed Swansea City boost despite goalscoring struggles

Given the hefty fee the Swans forked out for Idah, big things were expected from the striker in South Wales. However, he has started just three times for the club so far in the Championship from the 11 matches he has been at the club for, scoring twice.

This poor start has been amplified by Zan Vipotnik’s brilliant showing, with the Slovenian striker netting six times in 13 Championship appearances, which has led to some questions over whether Sheehan’s side needed to spend so much on Idah.

With this in mind, Football League World’s Swansea City fan pundit, Will Hughes, has backed Idah to perform for the Welsh outfit, highlighting what separates him from Vipotnik.

“Did we overpay for him?” questioned Will. “Maybe, potentially, but ultimately, he's who we've got.

"It's strange, becuase Vipotnik has been banging in the goals this season, he's out top scorer. But it's going to sound very silly, and a lot of fans might think 'what is this idiot on about', but I actually think Idah offers more than Vipotnik overall.

“Of course, Vipotnik has scored more goals, but I look at it and he's played more games and minutes. He's got a better strike and is a better finisher, but in terms of overall what they offer, I think it's ngiht and day.

"Vipotnik is very limited. Don't get me wrong, he's got a very good strike on him. He's got probably the most powerful strike in the club. He's proven that with some of the goals he's scored. It's a very useful weapon to have.

“But otherwise, there's not a lot about him. Take away his goals, he's not doing anything else.

“With Idah, you can see what he offers. He runs the channels, he's aggressive in the press, he wins the ball very well in the air, his hold-up play is good, he tries to link everything together from the front line. The only thing that's missing is a bag of goals.

"He's only played a full 90 minutes twice, and that's because Vipotnik missed the Charlton game through injury and he'd just come back in time for the Preston game.

"For me, Idah needs a run of games. If he's given the service, and we have a better manager in charge who can play attacking, on the front foot football, that's where you see the best of Idah in my opinion.

"I do think he has the potential to come good, 100 per cent, but it's tricky - do I think he's going to be a top goalscorer in the division? I don't think so.

"Do I think he'd be cut out for the Premier League if we ever got there? I don't. I just think he's good enough to do a job in this division personally. I don't think he's going to go above and beyond, I'd love to be proven wrong, but I don't think he's going to be necessarily a flop as much.

“The rest of Vipotnik’s game is just levels below Idah. They're both on different spectrums. If you can merge them together, you'd be laughing.”

Swansea City should give Adam Idah time to perform at his best

Given how much money Swansea paid for Idah’s services, it’s understandable why frustrations have started to creep in about his performances thus far.

However, the 24-year-old showcased during his time with Celtic that he has all the necessary components to perform up top in a high-pressure environment.

Scoring 29 goals in less than 70 appearances for the Scottish giants is no small ask and Idah has also proven himself capable on the international scene with six strikes for the Republic of Ireland.

Although goals haven’t been flowing at Swansea for the forward, it seems like only a matter of time before he gets to grips with Championship football once more and establishes himself in South Wales.
