Oli McBurnie is set to become a free agent following Las Palmas' relegation from La Liga
Swansea City are weighing up a move for Oli McBurnie in the upcoming summer transfer window.
According to the BBC, the 28-year-old is on the Welsh outfit’s radar after spending the season in Spain with Las Palmas.
McBurnie previously played for the Swans from 2015 to 2019, although he only spent one season as a regular part of the first-team squad.
He made 58 league appearances for the club across three campaigns, including featuring 16 times in the Premier League, before making the switch to Sheffield United after their 2019 promotion.
Swansea are reportedly considering an approach to bring McBurnie back to the club this summer following Las Palmas’ relegation from La Liga.
The Scot joined the Spanish side last summer from the Blades, arriving on an initial three-year deal.
However, it’s been confirmed that the club’s relegation from La Liga has now left him available as a free agent.
This has piqued the interest of Swansea, who are now eyeing a potential move to bring the forward back to the club, but they will face competition from divisional rivals Hull City, with Alan Nixon reporting earlier in the week that they are keen to strike a deal for the 17-cap Scotland international.
It remains to be seen whether he would be open for a return to the Swans, another Championship club like the Tigers, or if he would prefer to remain abroad.
McBurnie has featured 33 times in the top flight this season, scoring three goals and notching six assists, with Las Palmas’ relegation to the second tier already confirmed with just one game remaining.
McBurnie’s final season with Swansea earned him a big money move to Sheffield United, who had just gained promotion to the Premier League under Chris Wilder.
It was reported by the BBC that the deal cost £20 million, with the forward scoring six times in the league in his first campaign at Bramall Lane.
However, he struggled in the following two campaigns, with injuries hampering his progress, before coming back strong with a 13-goal season to help the Blades gain promotion again in 2023.
McBurnie scored six more Premier League goals in 2023/24 as the Yorkshire outfit suffered relegation, leading to his move to Las Palmas last July.
McBurnie has shown he can compete at a top flight level over the last two seasons, and has a history of scoring goals in the Championship.
He knows the club from his time at Swansea before, and could be what they need to push on and compete for a top six finish under Alan Sheehan.
In a deal that will cost nothing in terms of a transfer fee, the relatively low cost of a deal is also quite attractive for the Championship side.
