Sweden are in a second Olympic final in a row after beating Australia on Monday.

The 2016 runners-up were under pressure shortly before the break but weathered the storm with Hedvig Lindahl produced a smart stop to deny Alanna Kennedy from a free-kick and Sam Kerr having a strike ruled out after the whistle had already gone for a foul before she converted a half-volley.

The break came at just the right time for Sweden, who regrouped and soon found themselves ahead.

In the opening minute of the second half, a scramble broke out in the Australia area and, after a couple of Sweden attempts to direct the ball towards goal, Fridolina Rolfö hit a smart half-volley into the far corner for the game’s only goal.

Australia’s Ellie Carpenter will miss the bronze medal match after a late professional foul saw her handed a red card.

USA v Canada

Scorers: Fleming (pen) 75′

After consecutive Olympic semi-final defeats to the USWNT, Canada sealed a place in the Tokyo 2020 final on Monday.

A largely uneventful first half saw the USA lose goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher to injury after colliding with team-mate Julie Ertz.

Naeher saved three penalties, two in a shootout, to become the quarter-final hero but wasn’t on the pitch when a VAR review saw Canada awarded a spot-kick against the run of play with just over 15 minutes remaining.

Naeher’s replacement Adrianna French had no chance as Jessie Fleming found the corner from the spot to decide the game and send Canada into the final.
