Switzerland and Algeria face each other in their Round of 32 knockout match on Friday at the BC Place as both teams look to book their slot in the next round.
The Switzerland national football team enters this pivotal 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 knockout match on the back of securing the top spot in Group B.
However, manager Murat Yakin faces pressing defensive headaches ahead of the clash at BC Place in Vancouver.
Reliable right-back Silvan Widmer remains a major doubt for the match after managing a persistent hip and thigh issue that forced him to sit out recent team training sessions.
If Widmer fails his late fitness test, the young Luca Jaquez is fully expected to step into the starting lineup to deputise on the right side of the defence.
On a brighter note, the 20-year-old star Johan Manzambi, who has electrified the tournament by scoring three goals during the group stage, is set to start again.
Captain Granit Xhaka anchoring the midfield, and Remo Freuler is guaranteed a start with Breel Embolo leading the attack up front.
The Algeria national football team enters the knockout stage full of resilience after qualifying as one of the best third-place finishers from Group J following an epic 3-3 draw against Austria.
However, the Desert Foxes have been dealt a massive blow upfront as attacker Mohamed El Amine Amoura has been officially ruled out of this clash due to a severe hamstring injury sustained during the group phase.
On the defensive front, manager Vladimir Petkovic—who famously coached opponents Switzerland for seven years—expects to welcome back Rayan Aït-Nouri to the starting lineup at left-back, likely displacing Jaouen Hadjam.
Central defence will be heavily protected by veteran midfield anchor Nabil Bentaleb, who is prepared to win his 64th international cap.
Algeria will look to the iconic Riyad Mahrez to captain the side and dictate their attacking flow from the wings as they chase historical success.
Switzerland enters the Round of 32 in excellent, unbeaten form during the tournament. They comfortably topped Group B with seven points from nine available. The Swiss opened their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Qatar. They quickly built momentum by dominating Bosnia and Herzegovina in a 4-1 victory. Most recently, they consolidated their top-seed status by defeating hosts Canada 2-1 to secure absolute control of their group.
Algeria endured a highly turbulent group-stage campaign but showed incredible resilience to qualify as one of the best third-place teams from Group J. The Desert Foxes suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat against Argentina in their opening match. They bounced back significantly by defeating Jordan 2-1. Finally, they clinched their knockout spot via an entertaining, chaotic 3-3 draw against Austria, courtesy of a brace from veteran Riyad Mahrez.
