After another disappointing tournament campaign at this summer’s Euros, France U21 manager Sylvain Ripoll has this Monday been dismissed from his position by the French FA, according to a report from L’Équipe.
The former Lorient coach sees his time in charge of the national team end after six years, having failed to take Les Bleuets past the semi-final stage in any of the tournaments he has overseen on the continental stage. Earlier this summer, the team fell to Ukraine in the quarter-finals of the Euros.
His record also includes a group stage exit at the Olympic tournament in Japan two years ago, although he was also hamstrung by several clubs’ refusal to release their young players for the competition.
The decision comes a year away from the Olympics in Paris, where France will be expected to improve on their performance from last time – not least given the potential strength of their team, which could even include Kylian Mbappé.
