Liverpool rescued a dramatic 2-2 draw against Newcastle at St James’ Park after Dominik Szoboszlai converted a stoppage-time penalty to deny the hosts victory.

The Magpies made the perfect start when Anthony Elanga finished a swift counter-attack inside five minutes, beating Alisson with a composed low strike.

Andoni Iraola's side responded with greater pressure, but debutant goalkeeper Lukas Hornícek produced an excellent save to deny Florian Wirtz.

The hosts remained dangerous on the break after the interval, while Yoane Wissa continued to cause problems for the Liverpool defence. The visitors eventually found their equaliser nine minutes into the second half, with Cody Gakpo firing a low effort from outside the box beyond Hornicek.

Newcastle were back in front soon afterwards. Wissa drove through the Liverpool defence before finding substitute Joe Willock, who produced a superb finish from just outside the area.

The Reds pushed forward in search of another equaliser, but Newcastle had chances to extend their lead, with Wissa twice coming close before being denied by Alisson.

The hosts looked set to hold on, only for Lewis Hall to bring down substitute Víctor Muñoz inside the box deep into stoppage time. Szoboszlai made no mistake from the spot, smashing his penalty into the top corner to secure a point for Liverpool.

The result extends Liverpool’s unbeaten run in Premier League opening-day fixtures to 14 seasons, while Newcastle remain without a league victory over the Reds in 20 meetings.
