América maintained their unbeaten start to the Apertura season by seeing off Mazatlán in a routine win on Saturday.
Scorers: Fidalgo 29′, Madrigal 72′
The hosts took the lead just before the half-hour mark at the Estadio Azteca.
After some lovely work down the right flank, Nicolás Benedetti delivered a low cross that was steered home from close range by wandering midfielder Álvaro Fidalgo.
Las Águilas doubled their lead in controversial circumstances when Fernando Madrigal’s relatively tame volley was inexplicably allowed to hit the net after a dreadful positioning error by goalkeeper Nicolás Vikonis.
The goal was initially disallowed for an apparent foul in the build-up, but a subsequent VAR review saw no issues with the contact in the penalty area.
América now lead the league by five points after León were held to a 2-2 draw by Tigres earlier in the day.
