Few fixtures in English football offers the same sort of intensity as the Steel City derby. Regardless of league position or recent form, meetings between Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United carry a significant weight that’s shaped by generations of rivalry.
With the two sides preparing to face each other once again at Hillsborough, here’s a look back at their last five encounters in S6.

The first game we revisit was a Championship clash back in April 2010. The Owls took the lead just before half-time through midfielder Darren Potter, but the Blades would equalise on the hour mark thanks to Lee Williamson. This result left Wednesday in the relegation zone, a point from safety with just two games to play, while the Blades were comfortably in mid-table.
A couple of years later, the Steel City derby was a League One fixture, and United would suffer a defeat at Hillsborough when Chris O’Grady headed home a Lewis Buxton cross with less than 20 minutes to go. This would be a rare victory for the Owls at Hillsborough in the Steel City derby.
After the Blades suffered a few years in League One and Wednesday play-off chasers in the Championship, United entered Hillsborough without any fears in the 2017/18 campaign. With the Blades full of confidence after winning League One, United were the surprise package in the second tier that season, and an emphatic 4-2 victory at Hillsborough certainly boosted the feel-good factor.
A thunderous free-kick from John Fleck a few minutes into the game and another from former Owl Leon Clarke was followed up by a Gary Hooper goal before half-time. When Lucas Joao buried the equaliser in front of the Kop, the Wednesday fans were in full voice and bouncing around. But substitute Mark Duffy had other ideas. Within seconds of the restart, Duffy found his way in behind the Wednesday defence and fired the Blades back in front, a trademark moment which will forever be known as the “bounce slayer” goal. To finish off, Clarke added another against his former side.
The 2018/19 derby clashes were quite easily forgettable due to how cautious both sides were, resulting in 0-0s.
But, the most recent derby at Hillsborough was a very memorable one if you are a Unitedite. It was a close affair, both sides came close to taking the lead. The Blades eventually scored the first and only goal of the clash when Tyrese Campbell skipped past his man and delivered a low cross from the byline which Rhian Brewster tapped home in front of the Wednesday Kop.
Entering this game, Sheffield United are 22nd in the table and three points adrift of safety. Meanwhile, the Owls are bottom of the table on minus four points. However, the Blades should be 13th according to Opta’s expected table. A win for either side here could be a catalyst to their campaign.
As the Steel City derby edges closer, fans could turn to guides for reputable sportsbooks not on Gamstop. These types of platforms sometimes offer additional context around volatility in derby fixtures, drawing on data patterns and previous results.
