Panic has already set in amongst some Liverpool supporters over the delay in the record-breaking move to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. However, at this stage there is no need for such panic with the club still in advanced talks with the Bundesliga side.
A deal is still expected to be reached over the next couple of weeks, with Bayer Leverkusen reportedly demanding £126million for the attacking midfielder.
However, the transfer fee may not be the only reason behind the extensive talks between the two clubs. Reliable German journalist Florian Plettenberg has reported that they are also eyeing two Liverpool stars in the negotiations with Liverpool.
“Bayer 04 Leverkusen have the idea to include Harvey Elliott or Jarell Quansah in the deal for Florian Wirtz,” said Plettenberg.
“There’s no final decision on this yet, but talks are ongoing.”
Both players are facing uncertain futures at Anfield after a frustrating campaign under Arne Slot. Elliott has been limited to just 18 Premier League appearances this season and has only started two of those. Both of those games came after Liverpool secured the Premier League title, coming in a 3-1 defeat to Chelsea and a 3-2 defeat to Brighton. The 22-year-old did score in the latter of those games, but it’s clear to see that he isn’t amongst Slot’s plans.
With Wirtz closing in on a move to Liverpool, Leverkusen will certainly be on the lookout for a new attacking midfielder. That’s where Elliott could prove to be an astute piece of business and could join a list of young English talents to find success over in Germany.
Jarell Quansah has featured only 13 times in the Premier League this season, but has played a higher percentage of minutes than Elliott. However, with Joe Gomez expected to leave Liverpool this summer and Ibou Konate yet to sign a new contract, the Reds aren’t particularly stacked in that area.
The idea of including players in the deal for Wirtz could be a masterstroke from the recruitment team. Not only could it bring the financial cost of the deal down, but also keeps us on good terms with Leverkusen for future deals.
With Elliott being valued between £40-50million and Quansah at around £30million, it could save Liverpool huge amounts of money. Both players could realistically leave the club this summer regardless, so this move could make lots of sense.
