The Athletic’s deal sheet for this week is out – but things remain very quiet on the Chelsea front.
The Blues aren’t expected to sign anyone of note, with just a few smaller deals happening. Leo Castledine has been sold to Middlesbrough for £1m plus add ons, and while we expected a bigger name than him to go before the end of the window, we’re really not predicting any additions.

“Talks over transfer plans have taken place,” the piece claims.
“And while the thought process is geared towards recruiting in the summer, when more options are available, making signings for the first team before the deadline on February 2 is a possibility should an opportunity present itself.”
That sounds pretty hopeful to us – it doesn’t sound like anything is planned at all. The squad is in a decent place right now in terms of injuries. Fans would like to see a top striker added (amongst other things), but that’s never going to happen in January.
In terms of deals that might actually get done, a punt on a young player in the £10-20m bracket, like Mathis Amougou a year ago, seems most likely.
Liam Rosenior will be involved in the decision to some degree, but we could also see BlueCo push some funds in the direction of his old team Strasbourg, in an attempt to reduce the disquiet there a little.
A lot has been made of Liam Rosenior’s impact at Chelsea so far, but as Pat Nevin has pointed out, actually so far all we’ve seen has been very Enzo Maresca. The new manager isn’t going to change too much, too soon, and that’s probably sensible.
Rosenior took his pre-match press conference on Monday, and the focus looking ahead to tomorrow’s Arsenal game was the Gunners’ set pieces.
