Former Lazio striker Taty Castellanos explained why he decided to seize the opportunity to join West Ham United in the middle of the campaign.
The Biancocelesti had an eventful January transfer window, and it all began with the Argentine’s sale. Claudio Lotito and Angelo Fabiani accepted the Hammers’ €30 million offer. They then replaced him with Petar Ratkov, who only cost €13 million. Nevertheless, the young Serbian has yet to convince Maurizio Sarri, who has instead opted to field Daniel Maldini as a centre-forward.
This situation depicts the lack of cohesion between the head coach and the hierarchy, which has caused outrage among Lazio supporters. But while the fans have pointed the finger towards Lotito, the president insisted that he only sold players who asked to leave the club.
Interestingly, Castellanos’ recent statements to TNT Sports (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) match Lotito’s words, as the striker admitted he was determined to join a Premier League club to boost his chances of earning a spot in Argentina’s World Cup squad.
I train at West Ham, but I think about the national team. I live, breathe, and think about Argentina national team all day . My idea to come to England was because I wanted to be in the Premier League in the year of the World Cup. Competing here is important. You have to be prepared. When it’s your turn, you have to be in good form, especially physically and mentally to be able to compete.
Unfortunately for Castellanos, West Ham have been enduring a woeful campaign, as they currently lie 18th in the Premier League table. The 27-year-old will be hoping to help the East Londoners avoid relegation to the Championship, and catch Lionel Scaloni’s attention in the process.
If I don’t get called up, I will wish the best to whoever takes my place. In my position, it’s also difficult to find space because you have to compete with the best in the world, the likes of Julián (Álvarez), Lautaro (Martínez). There are many guys who are doing well in Europe.
Castellanos has thus far scored goals in his nine Premier League appearances. He also has one strike from two FA Cup ties.
