Rangers were expecting a stroll in the park against struggling Motherwell at Fir Park, but they had a dreadful start when in-form Kevin van Veen handed the hosts a surprise lead minutes after the kick-off. It was a roller coaster ride for the Gers who, however, claimed a 4-2 win thanks to Todd Cantwell and Malik Tillman’s goals after Bevis Mugabi’s second-half equalizer.
Below are the Rangers players rated in their win against Motherwell.
Allan McGregor: 5.5
It’s high time the Light Blues find a solution between the sticks. McGregor is not the same player he used to be a couple of years ago as his slow reaction and lack of movement cost them the second goal.
James Tavernier: 8.5
The captain fantastic led by example once again as he not only equalized from a stellar free-kick but also set it up perfectly for Fashion Sakala to grab a lead soon after the break. Should have done better defensively on a few occasions, particularly against set pieces and long balls. Narrowly missed a second free-kick in the closing minutes of the contest.
Connor Goldson: 6.5
Wasted a great scoring opportunity, but the centre-half had nervy moments in deep defence against Van Veen. Got dispossessed twice, and also failed to win the duels under pressure.
Ben Davies: 7.5
Was spot-on with his tackles, made an array of recoveries, dominated the duels and maintained a decent passing accuracy all throughout the game.

Ridvan Yilmaz: 7
Dad-to-be Borna Barisic was granted a leave and the fit-again Turkish fullback was handed a start to impress down the left-hand side of the pitch. His crosses were not accurate, but he got denied once by Liam Kelly after cutting inside from the left. Made way for Scott Arfield midway through the second half.
Ryan Jack: 8
Was solid in the middle of the park with timely blocks, challenges and recoveries. Did well to regain possession in midfield and drive the show with down-the-middle runs, dribbles and passes into the final third.
John Lundstram: 6.5
Forced Kelly to make a strong save, but was once again underwhelming in the centre of the pitch. Must take the blame for Mugabi’s goal, also his creativity and vision were entirely missing when the home sides were defending deep and staging swift-counter attacking moves.
Todd Cantwell: 8
Had a slow start to life in Scotland, but the Englishman proved his excellence with smart one-twos, link-up play as well as flexibility across midfield. Scored with his only attempt which handed the visitors a 3-2 lead before Cantwell’s insurance strike. Was taken off for Glen Kamara late in the match.
Fashion Sakala: 7.5
Timed his header perfectly to make it 2-1 following Tavernier’s exquisite delivery. Was lively from the flank as he kept the Motherwell defence on their toes before making way for Malik Tillman around the 65th-minute mark.
Ryan Kent: 7.5
Had a great build-up play with Alfredo Morelos which eventually resulted in Tillman’s first-time finish into the top corner. Failed to beat Kelly in goal, but he kept on creating chances on his own with swift runs, flashy skills and dribbles.
Antonio Colak: 6
Another below-par performance from the Croatian who failed to find the target time and again. Looked isolated upfront, and therefore, left the pitch for Morelos midway through the second half.
Alfredo Morelos: 7.5
Set it up for Tillman soon after his introduction.
Malik Tillman: 7.5
Made no mistake to pick up Morelos’ pass and find the back of the net minutes after his arrival.
Scott Arfield: 7
Calmed things down with his passing and holding ability.
Glen Kamara: 6.5
Was added to inject fresh legs in midfield.
John Souttar: 6.5
Was brought in to defend the two-goal lead.
