Rangers began their league challenge this afternoon against Livingston at Almondvale. They aimed for a commanding win to set the momentum en route to reconquering the Premiership crown, but an early goal from the hosts against the run of play stunned Giovanni van Bronckhorst. However, the Gers staged a stellar comeback late in the game with a couple of goals in two minutes from Scott Arfield and James Tavernier.

Below are the Rangers players rated in their edgy 2-1 win against Livingston.

Jon McLaughlin: 6

Was stunned within minutes when Joel Nouble looped it over him to earn Livi a surprise lead. Remained largely untested on most occasions.

James Tavernier: 8.5

The saviour once again as his stellar free-kick earned them the lead around the 74th-minute mark. Was lively all throughout down the right-hand flank with his trademark crosses, cut insides and overlapping runs.

Connor Goldson: 7

A strong defensive display from the Englishman. Was in the right place at the right time to deal with Livingston’s counter-attacks. Played plenty of passes out from the back.

John Souttar: 5

A disastrous debut for the former Hearts centre-half who was completely outmuscled by Noubie prior to Livi’s early opener. Looked clumsy with his challenges and was taken off for James Sands midway through the second half.

Borna Barisic: 6.5

Should have done a lot better to stop Nicky Devlin’s header that set it up for Noubie inside the first five minutes. His crosses and set-pieces were not up to the mark, but the veteran Croatian improved his composure as the game progressed.

John Lundstram: 7.5

Completed the most passes in the game. Drove the show from his central midfield role with his timely tackles and ball-carrying attributes. Committed a few fouls to break the opponents’ play.

Glen Kamara: 6

Earned a number of fouls, but the Finnish midfield ace lacked the edge in and around the attacking third. Was replaced by Scott Arfield midway through the second half.

Scott Wright: 5.5

Tried his best to beat past the opponents with his pace and flair. But the Scotsman looked far from impressive in terms of final deliveries. Was replaced by Malik Tillman at half-time.

Tom Lawrence: 7

The debutant missed the target a few times, but his intent and work rate must have boosted the gaffer. Made plenty of recoveries, and also exhibited his creative spark while operating as a ‘number 10’. Made way for Ryan Jack late in the match.

Ryan Kent: 8

His blistering pace and swift footwork often kept the home side on their toes. Set it up for Arfield’s equalizer with an exquisite cross. Got dispossessed a few times, but his directness and vision created an array of opportunities inside the box.

Antonio Colak: 6

An underwhelming debut for the centre-forward. Although he won the free-kick that led to Tavernier’s winner, the Croatia international hardly had any significant contribution in spite of being fed from the flanks.

Rangers Subs Vs Livingston

Malik Tillman: 6.5

Showed glimpses of his potential, but the young USMNT international needs more time to settle in Scottish football.

James Sands: 7

Did a lot better than Souttar, particularly in the closing minutes when Livingston were chasing for an equalizer.

Scott Arfield: 7.5

Scored spectacularly with a glancing header soon after replacing Glen Kamara in the middle of the park.

Ryan Jack: NA

Played too little to warrant a rating.
