Tavernier To Return? | Predicted 4-2-3-1 Rangers Lineup To Face Kilmarnock

A dull stalemate at Easter Road with Hibernian saw Rangers slip down to third behind bitter rivals Celtic. Although the champions are only ahead in terms of scoring more goals so far this campaign, the league leaders, Hearts, have restored their six-point cushion following a commanding win over Dundee United. The Light Blues must fight back and claim all three points on Wednesday night as they are set to host Kilmarnock, who are struggling for survival with just 17 points after 24 gameweeks.

Rangers have already defeated Killie twice this season under Danny Rohl’s tutelage. The German boss has been backed by the board in the winter window, and it remains to be seen whether he makes strategic alterations by deploying the January recruits.

Defence

Jack Butland is in majestic form between the sticks, as he grabbed a clean sheet against Hibs, despite facing 1.51 xGOT. He has not conceded in the league since their 3-1 Old Firm victory, and the streak should continue, with Killie being one of the least scoring sides of the Premiership.

Rohl handed a surprise start to Dujon Sterling down the right ahead of skipper James Tavernier and Max Aarons. However, his minutes must be managed carefully due to persistent injury problems, and Tavernier, who was an unused substitute last weekend, should return to the starting XI this midweek. John Souttar and Manny Fernandez must continue as the central defensive pairing, and the left-back role belongs to Jayden Meghoma until Tuur Rommens regains match fitness. Nasser Djiga would be there among the subs as the only cover in the heart of the backline, with Derek Cornelius still recovering from his muscle injury, and Clinton Nsiala joining Westerlo on an initial loan.

Midfield

Tochi Chukwuani looked impressive against Hibs with his timely tackles, duels and challenges while featuring as a ‘double pivot’ alongside Nicolas Raskin. Connor Barron is sidelined for months, and Rohl should rely on the duo for their all-rounds deep in the midfield.

Thelo Aasgaard failed to make a difference at Easter Road, but his creative spark as an advanced playmaker has earned the manager’s trust over Mohamed Diomande’s versatility in the middle of the park. Andreas Skov Olsen has yet to hit the ground running since his high-profile loan move from Wolfsburg, but he should get the nod over Mikey Moore from the right-hand flank. Djeidi Gassama is expected to operate from the left, and the decision to send Findlay Curtis on loan leaves them with Nedim Bajrami, Danilo and Oliver Antman as the other wide attackers besides Moore.
