Taylor: Bristol display my idea on how to play football | OneFootball

Gareth Taylor says our emphatic victory over Bristol City was an example of how believes the game should be played.

A brace apiece from Jill Roord and Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw, plus Laia Aleixandri’s first for the Club, saw us cruise into a five-goal lead before half-time.

And while we couldn’t add to our tally after the break, City were dominant at the Joie Stadium as we extended our unbeaten home run in the WSL to 21 matches.

Taylor was delighted with the display and praised his team’s ability to put his game plan into practice.

“I said recently that the performances we’ve had this season, including that one today, is exactly my idea on football,” the boss reflected after our win over the Vixens.

“The way we control, dominate, the way we have directional play, finding the spare player, working them to the outside.

“The processes we work in the final third, the combination play out wide and then obviously the finishing as well. It’s a really intelligent way of playing and we need intelligence on the pitch, we have that.

“I’ve been really impressed with the girls, this was my idea on how the game should be played.

“Sometimes we can't play that game because the opposition will make it difficult for us but I also think when you look at that side of the nitty gritty, I think we look like we’re capable of that and have proved it in the first home game.”

Victory for City moved us top of the WSL table ahead of Liverpool’s home fixture against Everton.

It’s been an impressive start to the campaign for Gareth Taylor’s side, with a clash against fellow highflyers Leicester next on the agenda.

However, the boss wouldn’t be drawn into talk about a title push yet, insisting City need to simply focus on the next fixture in front of us in a league where the slightest slip-up can affect a potential title charge.

He said: “We just have to take it game by game.

“I know it sounds boring but it’s about attacking the next one in front of you, not getting too far ahead and not worrying too much about what’s happening elsewhere.

“That’s difficult because it’s such a tight league in that respect and not one where you can lose four or five and still be champions.

“You can do that in other leagues where there are more games but not this one.

“Just concentrating on what you do is the most important thing.

“We can’t affect anything else, others results or decisions, we just take care of our business and know if we win the majority of our games we’ll be right in there.”
