Mike Maignan had a difficult season for AC Milan, not in the sense that he was poor, but perhaps, he faced higher levels of criticism about his performances. However, this could be due to the team’s overall performance. At Euro 2024, though, he has fully re-established himself as one of the best, if it was even needed.

Everyone from Milan faced higher levels of criticism last season, which is understandable in a season where it was easier to find things that went wrong, rather than what went right. Therefore, higher levels of scrutiny are understandable.

In turn, over a season the higher levels of criticism will have likely caused a slight drop in confidence. However, if there were any doubts about Mike Maignan’s levels, these have quickly been lessened after his Euro 2024 campaign so far.

He has conceded just one goal in five games, a hugely impressive feat which was made that much more impressive by the fact that the goal was a penalty from Lewandowski, who has only missed nine of his 89 career penalties, and an area Maignan struggles with anyway.

Following last night’s fixture against Portugal, which saw Rafael Leao eliminated after a tough campaign, Maignan’s French teammate, Aurelien Tchouameni spoke to the press about the shot stopper’s importance to the team. and his comments have been relayed by Radio Rossonera.

“He is an incredible goalkeeper. He is one of the best in the world, Milan is very lucky to have him. We are very good in defence, but when they manage to get through we are lucky to have a goalkeeper who makes the difference.”

This message was echoed by Kylian Mbappe too, showing the importance the entire French roster places on Milan’s No.1.
