Téji Savanier traded angry words with a spectator during Saint-Étienne v Montpellier, after appearing to be targeted by sustained abuse. According to L'Équipe, a video posted overnight shows the Montpellier midfielder responding sharply to one individual.
The clip, filmed at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard a few hours earlier, appears to capture the exchange shortly after the former Montpellier captain was substituted. The game was 0-0 at that point, Montpellier later lost 1-0.
It comes a little over a year after Savanier rebuked a spectator during the 32nd-round Coupe de France defeat at Le Puy, 0-4, on 12 December 2024. Then, he answered taunts with a remark about his salary.
This time he seemed to answer insults with insults. The supporter, seated a few rows behind the Montpellier bench, is said to have used obscenities, and Savanier was reportedly abused at every set piece, even by children as young as 10. That does not excuse his reaction, but it is the context.
The video does not show the full sequence, and no one is seen intervening to calm the situation. At 34, Savanier is a gifted player whose reactions can sometimes be excessive, and this episode does not set a good example.
