Téji Savanier left the pitch in tears after Montpellier’s 1-2 home defeat to Clermont on Saturday, a night that likely marked his final appearance at La Mosson.
The loss, on the 33rd and penultimate round of Ligue 2, left MHSC eighth and ended any hope of reaching the promotion play-offs a year after relegation. Team-mate Julien Laporte said it was a painful evening and that seeing Savanier like that was not what they wanted, as reported by Midi Libre.
His emotion came at the final whistle as the Butte Paillade chanted his name.
Savanier, 34, is out of contract at the end of the season, having arrived in 2019.
He started on the bench and played only 13 minutes. Across his Montpellier career he has made 209 appearances, scoring 50 goals and providing 38 assists.
