Temwa Chawinga sees an opportunity. For defender Kayleigh Kurtz that’s bad news. One moment of hesitation from Kurtz lets in the Malawian and the story is written. Chawinga robs the ball, rounds goalkeeper Casey Murphy and slots it into the corner. A record is broken as Chawinga becomes the first player in NWSL history to score in seven straight games.
For those who have watched her all season, and particularly for the Kansas City Current fans, it was no surprise. Chawinga is in a fascinating battle with fellow African Barba Banda for the Golden Boot. She has burst into the league with joy in her play and magic in her feet. For the rest of the division, the bad news for others is that this seems like just the beginning.
Temwa Chawinga is a 25-year-old Malawian striker who moved to Kansas City Current in January 2024. From the Rumphi district in her home country to the Sunflower State, she’s become a global superstar. After scoring goals for Blantyre Zero in Malawi, she signed for Swedish side Kvarnsvedens IK in 2017, scoring more than 50 goals in almost as many appearances.
The goals continued to flow in her time at Wuhan Jianghan University, where she spent three years, and attracted the attention of Kansas City.
The KC Current project, including the building of a purpose built women’s stadium, called and Chawinga’s star has shone ever since. Her pace, power and athleticism is lighting up the NWSL and providing KC fans with a new heroine.
Chawinga’s latest strike to break the record of consecutive goals was typical of her season. Let’s take a look at the impressive streak.
KC Current 5-2 Seattle Reign: A breakaway goal from The Current ends with Michelle Cooper squaring it to Chawinga for a tap in. Later, Chawinga intercepts on the half way line, races through on goal and finishes in style for a brace.
KC Current 2-2 Chicago Red Star: Chawinga picks up a loose ball on the edge of the area and smashes it low into the net.
Portland Thorns 1-4 KC Current: The fourth of KC’s goals in a stunning win. The striker again picks the ball up on half way, beats three defenders and slides it home. The ease with which she glides through the Portland defence is a thing of beauty.
KC Current 2-0 Houston Dash: Another brace in this one. Chawinga makes the most of defensive hesitation to score the first and then breaks through again for the second.
KC Current 1-2 Orlando Pride: Barbra Banda puts Orlando in front and you knew Temwa wasn’t going to let that slide. She gets the ball inside her own half, powers on and finishes with her left foot into the corner.
Washington Spirit 4-1 KC Current: A consolation goal on a bad afternoon for The Current. Chawinga beats the offside trap, takes the ball on and produces another calm finish.
North Carolina Courage 2-1 KC Current: The record-breaking goal. Chawinga looks to have earned a point with her latest strike but The Courage score late to take the win.
After back-to-back defeats for The Current since the league returned, Chawinga will be hoping to help to get them back on track. They host Utah Royals next weekend before another top of the table clash with Orlando Pride.
