Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag issued a selection hint at left-back ahead of the Carabao Cup third-round tie versus Barnsley.

Diogo Dalot has started in the position since the beginning of the Premier League season, but there could be a change tonight against the League One outfit.

Noussair Mazraoui could be handed a breather after recovering from a knock. This could see Dalot operate from the right side of the back four.

United wonderkid Harry Amass is a contender to start from left-back, having caught the eye with his performances during the pre-season campaign.

However, the youngster has yet to make his competitive debut for the club, and the Dutch tactician could be wary of picking him from the starting line-up.

In a Q&A session on Manutd.com, the manager dropped a hint by highlighting that Jonny Evans has previously played at left-back.

He said: “Yeah, if it’s necessary and you need someone to play in the position where you are not always playing.

“But Jonny Evans played before as a left full-back. Casemiro played before as a centre-half, so they know those positions.”

The 36-year-old joined United on a free transfer last summer, and he exceeded expectations with some top-notch performances in the league campaign.

The £65,000 per week star has proved a good squad player and he may get the nod at left-back ahead of young graduate Amass.

Evans has shown that he is comfortable playing with either foot. He delivered a sublime long-range assist with his left foot for Bruno Fernandes last term.
