Ligue 1’s presidents recently held a second meeting to discuss the current crisis over TV rights and the conflict between the French football league (LFP )and its broadcaster DAZN. According to a report via RMC Sport, tension has risen in the latest meeting over the ongoing crisis.Reims president Jean-Pierre Caillot reportedly raised the possibility of resigning from his position as head of the Ligue 1 presidents’ council. “I am irritated—especially since the utmost confidentiality was emphasised due to the legal proceedings—to see that statements from Nasser, the lawyers, Laurent, and myself are now on every website,” the Reims president said.
During the latest meeting dedicated to TV rights, Caillot had already voiced his discomfort, saying, “I feel very uneasy. The clubs that have entrusted me with this role—I don’t know what to tell them.”RMC report that this was in response to Olympique de Marseille president Pablo Longoria’s frustrations on leaks to French media. “I am tired of finding out about everything in this matter through the press.”Nasser Al-Khelaifi backs Reims president Caillot, Lens president Oughourlian bites backParis Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi spoke up in support of the Reims president: “I completely agree—this has nothing to do with Jean-Pierre Caillot. He is the opposite of all this. He is doing a very good job and must stay.”Yet, Lens president Joseph Oughourlian – was reportedly not best pleased with Al-Khelaifi’s response adding, “He’s doing a great job for you, Nasser, not for us. Ligue 1 has become the most unequal football league in the world. Thanks to Labrune and his gang.” The LFP – Ligue 1’s governing body – called for an emergency meeting last Wednesday with the presidents of Ligue 1 clubs ,according to RMC Sport. The outlet reported last week that the relationship has seriously deteriorated between LFP and the league’s main broadcaster – DAZN.The British-based media platform is reportedly withholding domestic TV rights payments due to a ‘perceived lack of loyalty’ from the Ligue 1 clubs. DAZN are also considering taking legal action against LFP. Ligue 1 clubs were set to receive €57m in TV rights money on Friday, but they only bank beIN Sports’ minor share thus far.GFFN | Freddie Aston
