Edin Terzic will not arrive at Lezama until this season ends, a decision aimed at avoiding overlap with Ernesto Valverde, who is still chasing Europe after the win over Osasuna with six games to play.
He has been calmly assessing the squad and shaping a summer plan for months. According to as.com, he is president Jon Uriarte’s choice for San Mamés, with Uriarte re-elected unopposed for the next four years.
The former Borussia Dortmund coach’s early brief includes restoring the best version of key figures such as Vivian, the Williams and Sancet, and lifting collective confidence after a patchy league alongside creditable Champions and Cup campaigns. He will also scan a tight market for one or two solid tweaks. Contract calls loom for Lekue and Yeray, whose deals expire on 30 June.
In parallel, work is already under way to extend Yuri Berchiche by one year and to update Rego’s terms, with the option to tie the midfielder down for two more seasons unilaterally.
Another file concerns the loan army, who are due back for pre-season, namely Agirrezabala, Canales, Gerenabarrena, Vencedor, Djaló, Rincón, Manex Lozano, Varela and Olabarrieta. Terzic must judge their fit given a first-team group that already stands at 27.
Decisions are also pending on B-team prospects los Santos, Monreal, Selton, Eder García, Ibon Sánchez and Hierro, who have tasted senior football this term, whether to promote them or seek fresh loans.
