Football League World previews Blackburn Rovers' home clash with Sheffield United and names the 11 players set to miss this fixture

Blackburn opened their Championship campaign in promising circumstances, drawing 2-2 away with recently relegated side Wolverhampton Wanderers, before defeating free-spending Middlesbrough 2-1 at Ewood Park to make it four points from two.

However, defeats to Queen’s Park Rangers and Preston North End followed, whilst they could only muster a goalless draw away to Lincoln City, as suddenly, Tony Mowbray’s side are desperate for a win.

Sheffield United find themselves in a similar boat to Blackburn, winning just one of their opening five games, that being a late 3-2 victory over Bolton Wanderers, with draws to Birmingham City, Swansea City, and Cardiff City following, before their recent home defeat to Norwich.

These two sides met in Lancashire just a couple of weeks ago in the League Cup, with the Blades prevailing 2-1, whilst the away side will be hoping for a similar result, whereas Blackburn will look to make amends, as Football League World takes a look at all 11 players set to miss this fixture on Tuesday.

Australian defender Lewis Miller ruptured his Achilles tendon back in February against QPR, and has been out of action ever since as a result.

The 26-year-old remains on the road to recovery, but is not expected to be back just yet, with Blackburn’s defensive options looking like slim pickings.

Moussa Baradji turned his loan move from Swiss side Yverdon into a permanent stay at Ewood Park this summer, with the Malian midfielder looking to have another strong campaign after his debut year in England.

However, a hamstring injury in pre-season has prevented him from making an appearance yet this campaign, as this clash against Sheffield United doesn’t look likely to be his first.

Harry Pickering

Harry Pickering started the campaign as first-choice left-back over Yuri Ribeiro, but having been taken off at half-time in Blackburn’s League Cup clash with Sheffield United two weeks ago, hasn’t appeared in a matchday squad since.

He’s not expected to return for this one, but there remains a ‘decent chance’ he will come back into the squad next Saturday instead, as per Elliot Jackson via X.

Scott Wharton

Scott Wharton has struggled with injuries the past year or so, and after a minor thigh injury in pre-season, has yet to make a matchday squad for his boyhood club this season.

The defender is on a long list of injuries across the back line for Mowbray’s side, and though he is nearing a return, this fixture may be one too soon for the 28-year-old.

Augustus Kargbo

Augustus Kargbo has had a tricky time at Blackburn ever since arriving from Italian side Cesena in January 2025, making just 18 Championship appearances for the club, with injuries keeping him out of action.

He is nearing a return to action after a year of frustration, but isn’t expected to be up to full fitness until after the next international break next month.

Japanese forward Yuki Ohashi, like Pickering, suffered an injury against Sheffield United in their League Cup clash a couple of weeks ago, coming off after just ten minutes.

No timeframe has been mentioned as to how long he will be out for, but Mowbray expects it will be for the foreseeable future, as Rovers will have to make do without one of their star forwards for this one.

Hungarian goalkeeper Balazs Toth was the subject of heavy transfer interest from Celtic over the summer window, but with the Bhoys opting to sign Sam Johnstone on loan from Wolves instead, the 29-year-old remains at Ewood Park for now.

Having suffered a quad injury in training, the Hungarian has been absent for the past couple of league games and isn’t expected to return between the sticks against the Blades on Tuesday.

Femi Seriki

Moving on to Sheffield United now, as right-back Femi Seriki is expected to be out for 'a considerable time’, having made it a trio of injuries sustained in their clash with Blackburn two weeks ago.

The defender’s injury was serious enough that they dipped back into the market to bring in Hamza Choudhury as cover, with Matt Doherty working his way back to full fitness, as Seriki is expected to be absent for this one.

Tahith Chong

Curaçao international Tahith Chong has been out of action since Blades’ opening-day stalemate with Birmingham City, as Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder isn’t being tempted into unnecessary risks to rush back any key players just yet.

The winger will be hoping to have a solid campaign after a few years of struggles, but his season doesn’t look like it will get up and running just yet.

Harrison Burrows

Left-back Harrison Burrows tweaked a quad in the draw against Swansea City and has been missing ever since as a result.

The former Peterborough United star has competed head-to-head for a place in the side under Wilder with Sam McCallum, and upon his return to fitness, will be hoping to be reinstated back into the starting XI promptly.
