Eleven Sunderland players are set to feature at this summer’s World Cup across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The call-ups cap a surge that included a final-day home win over Chelsea to clinch Europa League qualification.

According to Sunderland Echo, European football returns for only the second time, so the hierarchy will focus on strengthening former Lorient boss Regis Le Bris’ squad for at least eight extra fixtures in the Europa League league phase.

Captain Granit Xhaka will lead Switzerland against Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar.

Noah Sadiki, a midfield mainstay, and Arthur Masuaku, who finished the season on loan at Lens, are with DR Congo to face Colombia, Portugal and debutants Uzbekistan.

Striker Wilson Isidor made his Haiti debut this year, scoring in a 1-1 draw with Iceland. Haiti return to the finals after 52 years.

Brian Brobbey and Robin Roefs are in the Netherlands squad to meet Japan, Sweden and Tunisia.

Record signing Habib Diarra joins Senegal, who take on Iraq, Norway and favourites France.

Chemsdine Talbi has been called up by Morocco, who will face Brazil, Scotland and Haiti.

Omar Alderete will be the first in action, as Paraguay play co-hosts the United States on day two, then Australia and Türkiye.

Nilson Angulo travels with Ecuador to meet Germany, Ivory Coast and Curacao.

Simon Adingra spent the second half of last season at Monaco and now turns to Ivory Coast duty.
