Jamie Vardy has completed a deal to sign for Burnley at the age of 39

Jamie Vardy completed a surprising move to Burnley in the immediate aftermath of the transfer window closing.

The 39-year-old has made the switch to the Clarets outside the parameters of the summer market due to previously being a free agent.

The striker spent last season with Italian side Cremonese, where he contributed seven goals and two assists from 29 appearances in Serie A.

However, their relegation from the top flight led to him departing the club after just one year, with his contract expiring at the end of the campaign.

Vardy had been linked with a number of clubs, both in England and abroad, before signing on the dotted line with Burnley.

The Lancashire outfit were not considered as an option for most of the summer, with the likes of West Ham and Sheffield Wednesday instead regularly considered.

A return to Leicester City also could’ve been on the cards, although it appeared unlikely, and the former England international was also linked with a sensational move to Brazil.

But Vardy has been confirmed as a Burnley player, with Nicky Hayen bolstering his forward options after a disappointing start to life as the club’s new head coach.

How Jamie Vardy is still going at 39

Some supporters may be surprised to see Vardy still going at the age of 39, but the forward is confident he still has what it takes to compete at a high standard.

But the striker has been working hard to ensure that he keeps his body in top shape in order to remain competitive at this level.

It was reported in 2024 that Vardy installed a cryo chamber worth £15,000, as well as an oxygen tent, in his home.

He also has a swimming pool, which he uses for hydrotherapy, which also helps keep his joints fresh, and his body physically fit.

Brendan Rodgers’ praise of Jamie Vardy’s fitness

Former Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers previously praised Vardy for how sharp he keeps himself.

The Northern Irishman claimed that his motivation to stay fit is as important as his talent, and that it helps him maximise the years of his career.

“[Vardy] clearly has the talent, he has the will, all we’ve tried to do is manage him to maximise what we can get out of him,” said Rodgers, via The Sun.

“With his running, his intensity, that’s when he’s at his best.

“There’s no sign of it stopping because he is looking after himself.

“He has everything here to help in his recovery and recuperation after games, and he’s also invested a lot of money into items to have at home.

“He has machines at home where he can be constantly recovering, the cryo-chambers, so he’s invested a lot of money into that.

“He’s very focused on prolonging his career, and he knows that he needs to be as healthy as he can be, and a big part of that at his age is the recovery process.”

Jamie Vardy isn’t in his prime anymore

There is no doubt that Vardy is beyond his best years now, and that is no knock on his ability at the age of 39.

The former Leicester star was a Premier League winner at his best, claiming the golden boot in 2020, as well as being chosen as the player of the year in 2016.

Vardy was also crucial to the Foxes winning the 2021 FA Cup, their first triumph in the competition in their history.

Burnley can’t expect him to compete to that standard anymore, but there’s still plenty of life left in him just yet.

He performed well in Italy last season, and he still bagged nine goals in his final league season with Leicester in 2024/25.

If he can find the back of the net on a regular basis for Burnley, then it might help power them to a promotion fight in the Championship this year.
