From the best kit clash to upset watch, we look ahead to what promises to be a fantastic round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

And just like that, there’s only 16 teams remaining at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It’s been an absolute whirlwind of a tournament, whose expanded nature has given us nonstop action with no days off.

But our first matchless day is upon the horizon, and it’s starting to feel like the third-to-last day of vacation, when the ugly face of reality starts to materialize on the otherwise blissful horizon. Aside from a few hiccups, the 2026 World Cup has been largely fantastic, and the round of 16 promises to provide even more footballing excellence.

But before we dive into what lies ahead, let’s quickly recap the action in the first knockout round.

Ball Don’t Lie: The Football Gods Deliver Justice for the ‘Disgrace of Kansas City’

Algeria and Austria squared off in their final group stage match knowing that a draw would allow both teams to advance to the round of 32. Leading up to the game, many had anticipated a repeat of the “Disgrace of Gijón,” the 1982 World Cup match between West Germany and Austria that was essentially a scrimmage and changed the format of the tournament forever.

The match had already been billed as the “Disgrace of Kansas City” or the “Second Missouri Compromise,” and sure enough, it pretty much was.

Tied at 2-2 (they had to at least score a little bit), both teams stopped playing entirely, with Algeria having a leisurely kickaround near the center circle while Austria politely watched, feigning at sending pressure every so often. To the shock of the Austrians, Riyad Mahrez made a run into the final third and put the ball into the back of the net, giving Algeria a 93rd-minute lead and eliminating Austria for the time being.

You could chalk this up to a brilliant Algerian revenge scheme for Gijón (Algeria was the nation eliminated from contention in that match), but Mahrez’s comment that he had to “respect football” and score the goal, paired with what happened next, would suggest otherwise.

Three minutes after Mahrez’s surprise strike, Austria, now with a renewed sense of urgency, pushed the ball into Algerian territory, and equalized in the dying moments of the game. It was a shameful performance by both teams, and both were easily dispatched in the round of 32, with Austria barely registering a whimper in its 3-0 defeat to Spain, and Algeria losing 2-0 to Switzerland.

A Moment for Cape Verde

The third-smallest nation to ever qualify for a World Cup may not have won a single match at the 2026 tournament, but Cape Verde’s effort will forever be etched into World Cup history.

The Blue Sharks had perhaps the toughest schedule of any nation this year, and they went toe-to-toe with Spain, Uruguay, and Argentina in their campaign. The 3-2 loss to the reigning champions was the best game of the round of 32, and Sidny Lopes Cabral’s 102nd-minute equalizer is the goal of the tournament thus far.

Forty-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha was the breakout star of the 2026 World Cup, and he made yet another slew of ridiculous saves in Cape Verde’s final match. The expanded tournament had many worried about the performances of nations like Cape Verde, but in reality, the Blue Sharks put up better efforts than blue bloods like Germany and Uruguay.

Americas Rolling, Africa Faltering

Eight of the nine CAF teams at the 2026 World Cup advanced to the knockout stages, a pretty impressive feat. However, just Morocco and Egypt made it through to the round of 16, with several African teams blowing late leads in the process.

No team’s defeat was more devastating than Senegal’s, who had a 2-0 lead over Belgium through 85 minutes of play. It was a collapse for the ages, and a penalty strike from Youri Tielemans in the 125th minute was the death knell for the Teranga Lions, who were nothing if not dominant for over 90% of regulation. DR Congo held a 1-0 lead over England until Harry Kane awoke in the 75th minute, and a 74th-minute equalizer from Côte d’Ivoire’s Amad Diallo was nullified by Erling Haaland, who barely netted his tap-in in the 86th minute.

Conversely, teams from the Americas have rolled through to the final 16. Eight out of the 12 teams from CONCACAF and CONMEBOL made it to the knockouts, and seven of those eight are in the round of 16. Mexico looks unbeatable in the Azteca, the United States have been as good as they’ve ever been, Carlo Ancelotti has Brazil rolling, and Argentina has its eyes set on a repeat.

OK – enough about what’s already happened, let’s dive into the future.

Best Matchup: Portugal vs. Spain

The Iberian Derby is about to be as spicy as it’s ever been. Both teams have an intriguing mix of youth and experience, and this might be the best combined midfield we’ll see all tournament. But while possession will be key, the team that can be more clinical in the final third will ultimately decide this final match. For Spain, Mikel Oyarzabal is dependable but not in the least bit flashy, and this game will need some form of individual brilliance. That puts the onus on Lamine Yamal, who has scored just once this tournament but has been dangerous the entire time he’s been on the pitch. If Nico Williams can return healthy in time, he’ll more than willingly share the load with Yamal. Spain is a different team with those two on the wings together.

Meanwhile, Portugal will need to rid itself of the albatross that is Cristiano Ronaldo. The two goals against Uzbekistan were great, and he finally has his knockout stage goal with his penalty against Croatia, but at this stage of his career, he has a maximum of 45 minutes of efficacy. Right now, Goncalo Ramos is more potent than the all-time great, and would be the more ideal starter. Let Ronaldo finish the match on fresh legs. Give him a chance to net a late goal that would both satisfy his ego and create years’ worth of narratives.

Will Portuguese manager Roberto Martinez do this? Probably not. And it’s why Spain will ultimately advance in this clash of the giants.

Upset Watch: Mexico over England

At +114 underdogs, Mexico beating England wouldn’t be the biggest upset from an odds perspective, but historically, it would be massive. Mexico hasn’t made the World Cup quarterfinals since it hosted the 1986 tournament, and England has a strong, balanced side with a very capable manager in Thomas Tuchel.

From an overall quality standpoint, a Mexico victory looks unlikely. But the Azteca is the definition of a fortress. High altitude, insane atmosphere both in and out of the stadium, it’s no wonder that Mexico has only lost twice there in 89 competitive matches. However, the majority of those games weren’t against competition as good as England, and El Tri will definitely need to build on their 2026 World Cup performances, which have gotten better with each match. Prepare for an electric game.

Best Kit Clash: Canada vs. Morocco

The first game of the round of 16 will also feature the best kits of the round. Canada is going with its black away kit, which features a frosty maple leaf pattern and represents a new era of jersey design for the nation, which previously had a widely boring kit catalog. This is a design that has grown on me since its release, and seeing it on the pitch with the shorts and socks was certainly a big reason why.

Morocco will also wear its away shirt, a white design that features a traditional embroidery pattern in gold. This is one of the best kits at the 2026 World Cup, and the Atlas Lions will hope that it gives them the same luck it did against the Netherlands in the round of 32.
