What are the biggest ever Premier League transfers?
Not just this current 2024/25 season but across the entire Premier League era.
The first Premier League season after the top tier was rebranded, was 1992/93.
So now we are coming to the end of the 2024/25 campaign, that makes 33 seasons in total so far, of Premier League transfers.
Research has been carried out by football finance expert Kieran Maguire to find out which are the biggest ever Premier League transfers.
However, to make it relevant across more than three decades, Kieran and his mate Jason Laws have used a football inflation formula, so that Premier League transfers can be properly compared across these last few decades:
‘Now all the accounts for 23/24 have been published, have put them into the purchasing power inflation adjusted spreadsheet set up with my good mate Jason Laws (@lawsyboy) at Liverpool University, to work out the biggest Premier League transfers of all time, based on highest transfer from each season.
One transaction stands head and shoulders above all others and one player appears twice in the top ten.
We did it by adding together total revenues from each season to determine total PL income, and adjusting for each season in terms of percentage increases, which meant trawling through almost 700 sets of accounts. Then took the highest transfer from each season too and adjusted.’
This is how their research turned out, the biggest ever 30 Premier League transfers, starting with the top ten:
Biggest ever Premier League transfers – Positions 11-20
Biggest ever Premier League transfers – Positions 21-30
Those of you (Newcastle United fans AND neutrals) who were around at the time, that signing of Alan Shearer felt just incredible back in 1996, just the 29 years ago (how old does that make so many of you feel???).
