Last season, Cardiff suffered relegation to League One for the first time in 22 years, in what was a disastrous season on the pitch for the Bluebirds.

Turkish boss Erol Bulut started the season in charge of the club, but after he was sacked in September 2024, Omer Riza, a member of Bulut's coaching staff at the time, took the reins, firstly on an interim basis and then later permanently in December of the same year.

Riza himself wouldn't last the season, being sacked in mid-April with the club in 23rd position. Former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey would take charge for the remainder of the season as Cardiff finished dead last and suffered a catastrophic relegation.

12 players have left the club this summer, either on loan or permanently, including the likes of Anwar El Ghazi, Andy Rinomhota and Joe Ralls.

Seven more players' contracts are due to expire come the end of this season, as Football League World - with the help of Transfermarkt - takes a look at each one and their current situation.

Perry Ng

Ng signed for Cardiff in January 2021 and has since been a mainstay in the squad ever since.

The right-back was Crewe Alexandra captain before joining the Bluebirds, and has gone on to make over 180 appearances for the club.

The 29-year-old has missed the beginning of Cardiff's league campaign this season due to injury however, but will surely play a key role once again once back to full fitness.

18-year-old academy graduate Ronan Kpakio has filled the vacant right-back role in his absence, with Ng close to returning from injury.

Under contract until the end of the season, there has been no indication whether Ng will sign an extension with the Bluebirds as yet.

Ryan Wintle

From one former Crewe player to another, Wintle joined the Bluebirds from the Cheshire club in the summer of 2021, six months after Ng, and has since played 122 times for the club.

The midfielder spent last season on loan with Millwall, but found game time hard to come by at The Den under Alex Neil, playing just 497 minutes of Championship football the entire year.

Now back in South Wales, Wintle, 28, has played in all of Cardiff's matches so far this season as he looks to help the club immediately bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

His contract is due to expire this summer, with no signs of a new deal being struck as of now.

Isaak Davies

Welsh forward Isaak Davies has spent his entire career with the Bluebirds to date, aside from a loan spell in Belgium with KV Kortrijk, progressing through the club's academy ranks.

However, at 23 years old, Davies has failed to nail down a consistent spot in the Cardiff starting lineup, appearing as a substitute in each of their four league games so far this season.

Time is on his side, and being an academy graduate will play a role in the club's decision about whether to offer him a new deal, though he must prove his worth to manager Barry-Murphy this season if he is to have a future at the club.

Joel Bagan

Left-back Bagan has, like Davies, spent his entire professional career with Cardiff aside from a brief loan stint in the National League with Notts County and a year on loan in Belgium with Zulte Waregem respectively.

Bagan has been a regular fixture of Cardiff's starting XI in the opening League One exchanges so far this season, and seemingly has yet to fully win manager Barry-Murphy over, with 18-year-old Dakarai Mafico waiting in the wings.

Still just 23 years old, if Bagan were to impress this season, it would be a no-brainer to offer him an extension, though other clubs in search of a left-back will be keeping him on their radar.

Jak Alnwick

Stalwart keeper Alnwick has had a rollercoaster of a career, which has seen him switch from a number one to a backup depending on which club he was at.

Signing for the Bluebirds in the summer of 2022 after his contract at St Mirren expired, Alnwick has never nailed down the number one position as his own during his three years with the club, having initially been brought in to serve as deputy to Ryan Allsop.

The 32-year-old has since fallen down the pecking order in the Welsh capital, with Matthew Turner being preferred to him in their opening day victory over Peterborough, whilst Nathan Trott has since joined on loan from FC Copenhagen.

It is unlikely in any instance that Alnwick will remain with the club beyond next season, with his current deal set to expire.

Dylan Lawlor

19-year-old Lawlor made his debut for Cardiff last season in their 2-0 defeat away to Aston Villa, and appears to be a part of the club's plans moving forward, having started each of their five League One games so far.

It's likely that in any instance, Lawlor will be handed a new deal at some stage in the near future, given that he has started the season strongly and is a graduate of their academy setup.

Matthew Turner

Despite turning 23 years old last March, goalkeeper Matthew Turner made his Cardiff debut in their opening day victory over Peterborough.

In fact, the only time that Turner had previously played senior football was on two separate loan spells with Haverfordwest County and Aberystwyth Town, the latter of which was over two years ago.

The Welshman has seemingly taken the backup position from Alnwick for this season as he serves as deputy to Trott.

Whether he will be offered a new deal with the club remains to be seen; it will likely depend on whether the Bluebirds can earn promotion or not.
