The Athletic: Not Hall — PL club open talks to extend player’s contract today after Man United approach

Aston Villa have opened talks to extend Ian Maatsen’s contract beyond its current 2030 expiry.

Villa are keen for the 24-year-old’s integral role within the squad to be reflected in his terms, while also making it clear they want him to stay long-term, as per The Athletic.

It comes after Manchester United made an approach for Maatsen last week amid their ongoing search for a left-back.

United were swiftly informed that the Dutch international was considered untouchable, with Villa putting an end to negotiations then and there.

INEOS had turned their attention to Maatsen after accepting they would be unable to sign Lewis Hall this summer due to Newcastle United deeming him off-limits.

Now, on the final day of the window, the Red Devils have yet to secure any reinforcements on the left-hand side of defence.

Michael Carrick will likely have to utilise right-backs Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot to deputise at times, but one injury to either of them then causes an entirely new dilemma in their department.

Patrick Dorgu has grown accustomed to operating in a more attacking role on the wing. However, he was originally signed as a left-back when he joined from Lecce last winter, so he’ll be braced to potentially revert to his previous position when necessary.

As things stand, United’s only senior summer arrivals are Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and free agent goalkeeper Karl Darlow.
