The big Lewis Miley question

As the rumours start swirling prior to the Summer transfer window, Lewis Miley is already being linked with a move away from St. James’ Park.

With FFP/PSR, homegrown players remain at risk of being sold to bring in full profit.

Although Newcastle are thought to be in a much healthier financial position than they were this time last year, there could still be an element of appetite to sell players who have come through the ranks, due to the extra flexibility it then gives in being able to spend more on new signings.

However, it’s likely Newcastle won’t be pressured to sell their talents, like they had to last June when both Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh were moved on.

Lewis Miley has become a fan favourite since he became the knight in shining armour last season, filling the midfield void as the team suffered injuries and having to deal with Sandro Tonali’s long-term ban. Making seventeen Premier League appearances and three Champions League appearances that season, the then 17 year old gained a brilliant education and no doubt made him a better player with the experience.

The current hurdle in front of him however, is that the club have arguably one of the best midfields in the country at this time, with Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Tonali occupying the central positions.

It’s been a cameo role for Miley this season, appearing sixteen times in all competitions and having to bide his time alongside the likes of Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff.

When Lewis Miley has had the opportunity to start, he has impressed, most notably against Nottingham Forest in February where he scored Newcastle’s first of four, bringing the team level as they won 4-3 in a thrilling encounter.

With Eddie’s team playing in Europe next season in whichever of the three competitions NUFC end up in, it’s imperative a strong and sensibly sized squad is assembled.

First team squad players such as Longstaff, Callum Wilson and Matt Targett could all leave in the Summer, with replacements needed and other positions strengthened.

Newcastle United were hindered by a ridiculous number of injuries last season and could have done with a larger squad strength, when they faced the consistent midweek schedule.

Lewis Miley can play a big part in Newcastle’s next campaign and will benefit hugely by continuing working under Eddie Howe.

A great talent and still only 18 at the moment, Lewis Miiley continuing to build his physique and attributes, he can go on to be a top drawer player in the black and white.
