The United States has just beaten Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 at Levi's Stadium in the Round of 32 of the World Cup.
This is a tournament for the history books: for the first time, the USMNT is truly a candidate to win the trophy.
After Balogun's red card, the USMNT had to sit deeper and play a game it had not known: resisting the urge to attack at every opportunity.
Next, the USMNT will face Belgium in the next elimination round. However, join us to talk about the major takeaway from this victory against Bosnia.
During the second half, Folarin Balogun saw a red card after a reckless challenge on the Bosnia defender.
As a result, the USMNT was forced to play without its top striker and spent much of the match with only ten men, defending a narrow 1-0 lead.
Although many thought this would put the Americans in trouble, the exact opposite happened. By simply sitting deep and closing down, Mauricio Pochettino’s team survived the attacks of a weak Bosnia side.
However, the most crucial part was the patience and lack of desperation once they recovered the ball.
Christian Pulisic and Ricardo Pepi had intentions of going forward, but only when the moment called for it, allowing the team to get out of its own half and give their teammates some breathing room.
After winning the ball back, the team found its second goal following a foul on Dest right at the edge of the box, sealing the match in Santa Clara.
That’s why the USMNT is considered a candidate. After the red card, the team was no longer a team. They played like a unit, moving as a group and pressing when the timing was right.
