Coach Toppmöller explains the improvement after the break while goalscorers Ekitiké and Matanovic think about the team. The reaction to the cup win in Braunschweig.
Head coach Dino Toppmöller: “We had good control in the first half but weren’t as dangerous as we wanted to be. We went up a gear in the second half and had a better grip. Our pressing wasn’t as good in the first half. In the second we won the ball more and were much more active both with and without the ball. In the end, it was a very mature performance and boys did a good job. In an evening game in the cup, you have to make sure of the win first.”
Hugo Ekitiké: “We knew it was going go be a difficult game. We struggled in the first half especially. It was important that we scored the goals soon after the break. We combined well and the goals did us good as a team.”
Igor Matanovic: “I knew what to expect from my experiences in Bundesliga 2. Braunschweig fought well but we stayed calm and struck clinically after the break. Great credit to the team. Sometimes it takes 60 minutes for the first goal. The way we took the chances shows the quality in the team. We’ll prove that throughout the season.”
