Chris Wilder took over after five defeats under Ruben Selles in the Championship and the situation has been much improved for the Blades since.

Sheffield United sacked Ruben Selles and reinstated Chris Wilder as manager for the third time at Bramall Lane earlier in the campaign, with huge improvements seen with the Blades since.

Selles was in charge of Sheffield United for just six games, losing each and every one of them. That included five league defeats to leave the Blades bottom ahead of Chris Wilder’s return mere days later.

Sacking Wilder and Selles in a matter of months only to re-hire the former has been costly for the ownership group, but things are on track again now. Sheffield United have pulled well away from the relegation picture and are now looking up.

Given the league has been one which has seen the middle third all beating each other more than usual, it only takes one side to go on a consistent run and fly up numerous places.

Despite Sheffield United being 17th, there are just nine points to Wrexham inside the play-off places. They also have a game in hand over every team in the chasing pack aside from Watford. That could make for an interesting final 18 games.

Just how much have they improved since then? We have taken a look at the table since Wilder was reappointed. His first game in charge began with a home defeat to Charlton Athletic.

The improvements were not instantaneous, with Wilder losing three of the first four league games, and only winning three of his first 10 back in the dugout. However, since the November international break, it's been eight wins in 13 and much improvement.

Sheffield United sit ninth since Wilder's return but it could have been much better, especially after disappointing results against Southampton and Charlton recently, despite getting back on track with the 3-1 victory over Ipswich Town on Saturday.

Wilder is also in his first window in charge of the club since last January in 2025. It means they are able to acquire more of the players he wants as well, and further improvement would not be at all surprising from here on out.

The outlook is even better for the Blades when you look at the situation since matchday 16, and when you also factor in PPG rather than the actual table.

That's due to Sheffield United's game in hand, with 1.52 the figure since Wilder came in. Projecting that over the course of the next 18 games would mean a further 27 points for his side.

However, using the PPG over the last 13 games instead of the last 23 and it's clear to see why optimism is growing at Sheffield United regarding a late play-off tilt. They have 25 points in that time at just less than 2PPG (1.92).

Using that figure would mean roughly 35 more points and 69 overall. That figure would mean a play-off place last season and back in 2022/23, while also coming very close in numerous other recent campaigns.

Wilder's men cannot afford more major blips like Charlton and Southampton, but their improvement is tangible in terms of the performance data and the actual results themselves.
