Napoli have set their sights on Tottenham Hotspur winger Mathys Tel, but ‘the club must handle’ two departures before they can begin negotiations for the Frenchman.

Tel first arrived in north London on loan after struggling for regular game time at Bayern Munich, prompting a move to Tottenham in February 2025.

The 21-year-old made an immediate impact under former boss Ange Postecoglou, featuring 20 times, including five appearances in the Europa League as Spurs ended their 17-year wait for silverware.

Tel finished the campaign with three goals and one assist before making the move permanent last June, putting pen to paper on a contract running until 2031.

However, after seeing his playing time diminish at N17 last season, it was claimed the French winger had become ‘eager for a change of scenery’.

That feeling has only been reinforced by Tottenham’s activity in the transfer market, with new head coach Roberto De Zerbi expected to strengthen heavily in the wide areas this summer, leaving Tel wary of another campaign spent on the fringes.

The Frenchman was offered to Galatasaray through agents last month, while Lyon and Roma also expressed interest in the frontman.

According to Italian journalist Marco Giordano, Napoli have now entered the picture, although the Serie A giants cannot begin formal negotiations until they offload two attackers.

Massimiliano Allegri has no shortage of attacking options at his disposal, meaning departures are inevitable, with Romelu Lukaku among those expected to move on after refusing to accept a reduced role.

Lorenzo Lucca is another player facing an uncertain future, with the striker currently recovering from an ankle injury and seemingly falling out of favour after spending the second half of last season on loan at Nottingham Forest.

Despite the transfer speculation, Tel has played a prominent role throughout De Zerbi’s four pre-season fixtures, contributing a goal and an assist along the way.

However, with Tottenham holding direct talks over moves for Cody Gakpo and Savinho, the latter appearing an unrealistic target for Serie A clubs, the 21-year-old is expected to consider any serious offers that arrive.

With a month remaining before the transfer window closes, it remains to be seen whether Napoli can make the necessary room in their squad and turn their interest into a formal approach for the Tottenham winger.
