The curious Calvin Miller returning to Celtic story

Calvin Miller was informed in the closing stages of the transfer window that a potential move back to Celtic had fallen through, despite an agreement reportedly being reached with Falkirk...

That claim has been made by former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew, who says the situation unfolded unexpectedly late in the day.

Miller came through the youth ranks at Celtic and broke into the first team under Brendan Rodgers in 2016, emerging around the same time as Anthony Ralston.

However, his time at Celtic ended after difficult loan spells with Dundee and Ayr United. He later moved to Harrogate Town in 2020, followed by spells with Notts County and Greenock Morton.

He joined Falkirk in 2023, where he has since become a standout performer. The winger has played a major role in the club’s consecutive promotions back to the top flight under manager John McGlynn.

According to Mulgrew, negotiations for a return to Celtic had been completed, only for the move to be blocked with fewer than three hours left in the transfer window.

Speaking via Go Radio Football Show, Mulgrew said: “It happens both ways, though. I know that Celtic were trying to get Calvin Miller. He thought he was in the door. His agent got a call two days before [the deadline]saying that it’s ready to be done, they want him, and he was delighted to go back to Celtic.

“8.30pm on the night of the window [closing], it was done – obviously Celtic had plates spinning the way players do.”

“I don’t know where he was [in that pecking order], whether he was second choice, and he thought he was getting a dream move back to Celtic and it didn’t happen. He got told at 8.30pm that the deal is off, so it happens both ways. That’s why these things drag out.”
