It's been a dry few years for the Trotters as they've looked to battle back from League Two to their former heights.

For a club that spent over a decade in the Premier League from 2001 to 2012, and has won the FA Cup on four occasions, they will be hoping to kick on and rejoin the top table of English football in the near future.

Bolton’s iconic stint in the Premier League during the early 2000s will drive that, with memories of Sam Allardyce's Galactico signings still relatively fresh in the memory.

That's Bolton's modern history, though, and we know they are a club that go way, way back when it comes to success, trophies and driving fans through the turnstiles to watch them in action.

Bolton have never won the top flight despite being one of the founding members of the Football League in 1888.

This makes the Whites one of the most historic members of English football, and their four FA Cup triumphs back up that claim.

But supporters were made to wait for their first taste of success, with the first of those victories not coming until 1923.

Bolton lived up to the occasion when they ended the wait for major silverware, with their 2-0 win against West Ham clinching the FA Cup in the first ever game played at Wembley Stadium.

David Jack and John Smith found the back of the net to secure the trophy in front of King George V in a moment that those in the crowd will never have forgotten.

This was a historic moment in English football, and one that fans flocked to see, with an estimated 200,000 in attendance of their finest achievement.

The attendance was officially recorded at 126,047, but it’s believed that the real figure far exceeded that and reached as high as 200,000.

A lot of iconic images came from the match, with it being dubbed the White Horse Final due to the white police horse used to keep the crowds back from the pitch.

Bolton marked the occasion in 2023 by celebrating the centenary in a league clash against Fleetwood Town, producing a commemorative matchday programme.

FA Cup triumphs don’t get more iconic than at Bolton

The 1923 final is one of the most memorable FA Cup victories of the historic trophy, and it was the first of three won by the club in the 1920s.

Bolton won again in 1926 and 1929, but had to wait another 29 years for their next success.

The Whites won against the remaining members of the Manchester United squad in 1958, just a few months after the Munich Air Disaster.

Bolton also featured in the 1953 final, losing 4-3 to Blackpool in what was dubbed the Stanley Matthews final, with the forward scoring a hat-trick to seal the trophy for the Seasiders.

While the Whites are far from the most successful team in the competition’s history, there is no denying their great history regardless.

And it all began when around 200,000 fans flocked to see their first triumph over 100 years ago.
