Matchday eight continued Sunday with three more matches. Here is what went down around the league.
After a lengthy weather delay, the Houston Dash fought back to earn a draw against league leaders KC Current in Texas. Amanda West capitalized on a bad giveaway from Adrianna Franch to score her first NWSL goal and snatch a point for the hosts late on. While they lost their lead in the dying minutes, the Current preserved their unbeaten start to the season.
Orlando eased past Racing Louisville with a narrow victory to move top of the league thanks to KC’s draw in Houston. An early Barbra Banda goal was all the Pride needed to snatch all three points at home.
To round out the day, Chicago snatched a late win against the offseason’s big spenders, Bay FC. The latter has had a rough start to their campaign, winning just two of their first eight games, and a late Ally Schlegel delivered their fourth in a row.
Orlando’s Barbra Banda is Sunday’s player of the day in NWSL and it wasn’t a difficult choice. With another goal this evening against Louisville, Banda has now registered four goals and two assists since signing for the Pride just a few weeks ago.
Jane Campbell was the only thing standing between KC and another win. Her gorgeous diving save in stoppage time to keep the scoreline level is easily the moment of the day.
Campbell remains in the headlines after a busy day between the sticks for Houston.
A win for Orlando combined with KC’s surprising draw in Houston means the Pride will end the round at the top of the table, but the Current do have a game in hand on the new league leaders.
Meanwhile, Bay FC’s loss means they have lost four of their last five and remain in 12th place. While scoring goals has been no problem for the NWSL newcomers, 19 goals conceded in their first eight games leaves Albertin Montoya’s side in a sorry state.
The league returns with midweek action in just three days as champions Gotham take on Houston, Seattle host KC Current and bottom-side Utah will travel to take on San Diego.
