“The expectation…” – David Ornstein issues fresh update on Manchester City’s 115 Premier League charges | OneFootball

David Ornstein has provided an update on the Premier League’s case against Manchester City during a recent Q&A for The Athletic.

Manchester City could win a sixth Premier League title in seven years on Sunday afternoon, with Pep Guardiola’s side requiring a win over West Ham at the Etihad Stadium to claim a record-breaking fourth consecutive English top-flight title.

The Sky Blues’ Premier League campaign has continued to be overshadowed in some quarters however, with the 115 charges against Manchester City for alleged financial breaches by the Premier League following a four-year investigation in February 2023 yet to be resolved.

The charges, which relate to financial information, profitability and sustainability, player and manager remuneration, failure to cooperate and UEFA regulations, have been strongly denied by Manchester City.

The east Manchester club were hit with over 100 charges for alleged financial breaches by the Premier League last year, and if found guilty face the prospect of relegation from the top-flight.

A variety of punishments are available including points deductions – a punishment recently handed to both Everton and Nottingham Forest for Financial Fair Play breaches.

An independent commission is set to hear the case towards the end of this year, with the potential for an outcome to be announced before the conclusion of the 2024/25 campaign.

Journalist David Ornstein of The Athletic has provided a fresh update on the case during a recent Q&A, saying: “The expectation within football is that City’s case will be heard in the Autumn. That is unconfirmed, though, and the truth is we don’t know for certain.

“The various parties have been gathering witness statements in preparation for the case, but that is standard practice and we know very little more at this juncture.”

Manager Guardiola is out of contract at the Etihad Stadium at the end of the 2024/25 season, with it currently unknown whether the 53-year-old will further extend his stay at the club.

The Catalan moved to Manchester City from Bayern Munich in 2016, and has won 16 trophies so far; including the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup.
