Before the international break, you played six out of seven games away from home. Have you ever experienced anything like that before?“No, never. It was a lot, mentally as well. But that’s football nowadays. You have so many games, you adapt. It was okay.”
How would you rate the games during that period? How would you rate your performance?“I feel like I’m going through a good phase at the moment. I feel very confident. I feel good on the pitch. I feel like I’m an important part of the team, and I sense that from my teammates too, which helps me a lot. And I think we’re doing well as a team. We haven’t managed all the results we set out to achieve. But I still think we’re on the right track. We’re all just hoping for a bit more decisiveness in some games, meaning that not every game ends up so close. It helps when you’re a few goals ahead and you can go a bit easier for the last twenty or thirty minutes. But we also know how football is, that you always have to push, no matter what kind of game it is. Hopefully we can decide our games a little earlier in the coming weeks.”
You are higher in the table than a year ago and have also collected more points. Why has this season been going so well so far?“We are very disciplined. Everyone knows what they have to do tactically. We are also in very good physical shape. I think the chemistry in the team and in the coaching staff is good, and you can feel that. All of this has led to us getting off to a good start to the season and now being in a much better position than in previous years, when we often struggled at the beginning of the season.”
Let’s look ahead. Six of the next eight games will be played at home. How much are you looking forward to seeing the home fans?“I’m really looking forward to it, they give us a lot of energy. We’re always keen to play, in every game of course, but especially at home in front of the Yellow Wall. I’m looking forward to the next few games. Hopefully we’ll play very well and get good results.”
Next up is Stuttgart. How do you see the match?“We know they’re a good team who have played well against us in recent years. But I believe we have enough quality and team spirit to get a good result.”
“Emre is very important for the team. He’s our captain, of course, and I’m just happy that he’s back, bringing that energy with him and, of course, his performances.”
