The favourites to be the next Southampton manager

Southampton’s search for a new manager is underway after the decision to sack Russell Martin at the weekend.

The Saints’ miserable return to the Premier League continued with a 5-0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, with the visitors racing into a five-goal lead at half-time. Fans poured out of St Mary’s as Spurs ran riot, with Martin’s unrelenting faith in playing out from the back criticised during a torrid start to the campaign.

Southampton have just five points from 16 games and are already nine adrift of safety. Whoever is appointed as Martin’s successor has a huge task on their hands to salvage their top-flight status. We’ve looked at the bookmakers’ view and the odds from reliable service 1x Bet. Here are the five frontrunners to become the next Southampton manager.

The favourites to be the next Southampton manager

Kasper Hjulmand – 14/1

Kasper Hjulmand is seeking an opportunity in club football after ending a spell in charge of the Denmark national side after Euro 2024. Hjulmand led Denmark to the semi-finals of the European Championship in 2021 and won the Danish Superliga with Nordsjælland in 2011/12. Linked with West Ham last month, there would be question marks surrounding his lack of experience outside of his homeland.

David Moyes – 10/1

David Moyes insisted he wanted to remain in football after leaving West Ham last summer. His departure from the Hammers polarised opinion, with Moyes having overseen the most successful period in West Ham’s modern history. He led the Irons to three successive seasons in Europe and lifted the Europa Conference League – a first major trophy in 42 years – in 2023. However, criticism of his pragmatic style led to unpopularity in the capital. That said, West Ham’s struggles since his exit have since seen his stock increase.

Graham Potter – 7/1

Graham Potter would offer a more stylistically suitable replacement, should Southampton want to build on the playing principles Martin aimed, albeit unsuccessfully, to implement in the Premier League.

Potter built his reputation during strong spells at Swansea and Brighton, leading the latter to their highest-ever Premier League finish at the time before departing for an ill-fated spell at Chelsea.

The 49-year-old, who made eight Premier League appearances for Southampton during the 1996/97 season, has been patient as he assesses a return to management.

Carlos Corberan – 7/1

Carlos Corberan’s tenure at West Bromwich Albion has placed him in contention for the role. The Spaniard inherited a side second-bottom of the Championship in 2022/23, before overseeing a turnaround that led to the Baggies just missing out on the play-offs.

Last season, he guided the side to fifth before defeat in the play-offs and has West Brom well positioned for a promotion challenge again in 2024/25.

Danny Rohl – 8/11

Danny Rohl is the current favourite to replace Martin and return to St Mary’s. The 35-year-old previously worked as an assistant to Ralph Hasenhuttl at Southampton. Rohl took his first senior role at Sheffield Wednesday in October 2023, becoming the youngest manager in the Football League at that time.

Winless in their opening 11 games, he led the side to Championship safety. This season, the Owls are sitting just outside the play-offs after remarkable improvement under the German. Wednesday now face a fight to hold onto their emerging head coach with Southampton placing him on their shortlist.
