The race to reach the promised land of the Premier League is heating up as we head down the final straight.
It’s been another gripping season in England’s top tier and there’s plenty still to play for. From the automatic places to the play-off positions, Championship clubs are jostling for position with just 11 games to go.
We’ve decided to look at how the bookmakers’ view the race for promotion to the Premier League. Using the latest odds from Betway, we’ve ranked the five favourites for Championship promotion. For those interested in a flutter, you can get a betway sign up code here.
What a turnaround it’s been for Frank Lampard and Coventry City. The Sky Blues were 17th in the table and just two points above the relegation places when the ex-England midfielder took charge in November. Lampard replaced the long-serving Mark Robins and has overseen an incredible upturn.
Coventry have climbed into fifth and have won eight of their last nine to emerge as one of the form teams in the division. The only blemish on that run was defeat to leaders Leeds, as Coventry dare to dream of a place in the Premier League for the first time since 2001.
Sunderland sit fourth in the table after an impressive campaign under Régis Le Bris. Somewhat of an unknown quantity, Le Bris has led the Black Cats into promotion contention after a disappointing 16th-place finish in 2023/24.
Summer signing Wilson Isidor has impressed with 10 league goals, while Sunderland secured the loan coup of Enzo Le Fee in January. Defeats to Leeds and Hull this month have dented their automatic hopes but Sunderland remain well placed. There’s a 13-point buffer between Le Bris’s team and seventh-place.
Burnley’s bonkers defensive record has placed the Clarets in contention for an automatic return to the Premier League. Scott Parker arrived as head coach in the summer and a safety-first approach has made Burnley difficult to beat.
Incredibly the Lancashire side have conceded just 10 goals all season.
James Trafford kept 12 consecutive clean sheets from Boxing Day until March, in an astonishing run of solidity. However, a lack of goals leaves Burnley outside the automatic places at present, two points behind second-placed Sheffield United.
Chris Wilder deserves huge credit for his rebuild of Sheffield United. Relegated in miserable fashion last season, the Blades saw an exodus of senior players at Bramall Lane.
Wilder’s shrewd recruitment has helped Sheffield United bounce back, sitting second in the table as things stand. Sheffield United have changed divisions four times in the last five seasons during a yo-yo existence and will hope for another upward change this season.
Leeds United are odds-on favourites for promotion after opening up a five-point gap between them and third-place Burnley. Daniel Farke has twice won promotion from this league before with Norwich and has Leeds at the top of the table.
The league’s leading scorers, with 72 goals, Leeds have not lost since November and have claimed dramatic recent wins over promotion rivals Sheffield United and Sunderland.
