Australia claimed a superb 2–0 victory over Türkiye in their World Cup Group D opener despite conceding 72% possession, with Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe scoring the goals that secured a clean sheet win. Patrick Beach made multiple crucial saves as Türkiye fired 30 shots at goal without finding the net. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Australia v Türkiye.

Winners

Patrick Beach (Australia)

Patrick Beach delivered an exceptional World Cup debut performance, making multiple crucial saves to anchor Australia's defensive resistance. The 22-year-old goalkeeper produced a brilliant stop to tip Abdülkerim Bardakcı's powerful long-range effort onto the post in the first half, setting the tone for a commanding display between the posts.

Beach's finest moment came when he denied Kerem Aktürkoğlu's first-time finish from close range with a brilliant reaction save that kept Australia's two-goal advantage intact. He also produced a great diving stop to keep out Arda Güler's free kick aimed at the bottom left corner in the 57th minute, and saved efforts from Zeki Çelik and Hakan Çalhanoğlu.

Facing 30 shots from a Türkiye side that dominated possession, Beach commanded his area with composure beyond his years. His selection ahead of experienced Matthew Ryan represented a bold call from Tony Popovic, but the young goalkeeper repaid that faith by preserving the clean sheet that underpinned Australia's counter-attacking victory.

Nestory Irankunda (Australia)

Nestory Irankunda opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a composed finish that perfectly encapsulated Australia's counter-attacking approach. Collecting Paul Okon-Engstler's incisive lofted pass, Irankunda used one touch with his right foot to beat defender Merih Demiral inside the area before slotting calmly into the bottom corner.

The forward's explosive pace and direct running constantly threatened Türkiye's defensive transition throughout his 61 minutes on the pitch. He had another effort saved comfortably by Uğurcan Çakır after cutting inside, demonstrating his willingness to attack the goal whenever opportunities arose against the opposition backline.

Irankunda's clinical finish gave Australia the lead they would protect for the remainder of the match, validating the game plan of absorbing pressure and striking efficiently. His movement and ability to run in behind provided a constant counter-attacking outlet that punished Türkiye's commitment of bodies forward.

Loser

Barış Alper Yılmaz (Türkiye)

Barış Alper Yılmaz endured a difficult evening on Türkiye's left wing, struggling to make any impact during his 45 minutes on the pitch. His ineffectiveness prompted Vincenzo Montella to substitute him at half-time, bringing on Kenan Yıldız in search of greater attacking threat down the flank.

The winger lost virtually every duel against Australia's right wing-back Jacob Italiano, who nullified his dribbling attempts and forced him into repeatedly passing backwards. Yılmaz failed to deliver dangerous crosses or create chances for teammates, leaving Türkiye's left side toothless throughout the opening period.

Yılmaz's struggles encapsulated Türkiye's broader frustrations in converting possession into penetration. With the winger unable to stretch Australia's defensive block or provide service for Kerem Aktürkoğlu, attacks became predictable. His half-time substitution was an admission that a different approach was needed if Türkiye were to find a way back into the contest.
