Canada salvaged a point in their historic first World Cup match on home soil as substitute Cyle Larin struck in the 78th minute to earn a 1–1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina at Toronto Stadium. Jovo Lukic had given Bosnia the lead with a close-range header in the 21st minute, but Jesse Marsch's attacking changes transformed Canada's blunt attack as Larin scored just two minutes after entering. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Canada v Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Winners

Cyle Larin (Canada)

Cyle Larin needed just two minutes to write himself into Canadian football history. After entering as a 76th-minute substitute for Tani Oluwaseyi, the striker received Promise David's layoff at the edge of the area, turned brilliantly, and fired a right-footed shot past Nikola Vasilj to rescue Canada from what would have been a seventh consecutive World Cup defeat.

The goal was Larin's response to being left out of the starting lineup as Jesse Marsch opted for Jonathan David and Oluwaseyi. Receiving the ball with his back to goal, Larin's turn created separation before his shot took a slight deflection off Nikola Katic and found the bottom corner. His celebration saw him cover his ears amid the Toronto Stadium noise.

Larin nearly won the match in added time, with a left-footed effort from inside the area blocked by Tarik Muharemović at 90+6 minutes. His equalizer turned a likely defeat into a valuable point, ended Canada's World Cup losing streak dating back to 1986, and kept their Group B ambitions intact heading into the remaining fixtures.

Tarik Muharemović (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Tarik Muharemović delivered an outstanding defensive display that kept Canada at bay for most of the match. The centre-back repeatedly frustrated the Canadian attack with his positioning, timing, and physical presence, making crucial interventions when the hosts threatened to find a way through Bosnia's organised backline.

Muharemović blocked Jonathan David's left-footed shot at 29 minutes when Canada's leading scorer had worked an opening inside the area. He made another vital intervention when Tani Oluwaseyi's header appeared destined for goal. In the final minute of stoppage time, he threw himself into the path of Larin's left-footed effort that could have won the match for Canada.

Despite Larin eventually finding the equalizer, Muharemović's defensive work ensured Bosnia took a point from Toronto rather than suffering defeat. His aerial dominance alongside Nikola Katic nullified Canada's set-piece threat throughout, with Derek Cornelius and others failing to capitalize on nine first-half corners against the Bosnian centre-back pairing.

Loser

Jonathan David (Canada)

Jonathan David endured a frustrating evening in his World Cup home debut as Canada's all-time leading scorer failed to deliver when his team needed him most. Despite frequent involvement in build-up play and willing defensive pressing, his finishing touch was absent throughout, and he was replaced at 61 minutes as Jesse Marsch sought fresh attacking impetus.

David's left-footed shot from inside the area at 17 minutes lacked the power expected of a proven goalscorer, allowing Nikola Vasilj to save comfortably. Another effort at 29 minutes was blocked by Muharemović. His shots consistently came out weak rather than threatening the Bosnian goal, leaving Canada struggling to convert their territorial dominance into clear openings.

The striker's substitution at 61 minutes proved telling. Within 17 minutes of David departing, Promise David and Cyle Larin combined for the equalizer that rescued Canada's opening fixture. While his willingness to press and drop deep contributed to Canada's build-up, his inability to provide the decisive finish left the hosts needing their bench to salvage a point.
