Harry Redknapp has been talking about Newcastle United.
The former West Ham manager and player, discussing Eddie Howe and his team now eleven weeks into the new season.
Newcastle United playing the Hammers this weekend.
A 2pm kick-off on Sunday afternoon at the London Stadium.
Newcastle United set to face the Hammers after three home games in a row in three different competitions, the trio of matches having all been NUFC victories
Harry Redknapp talking to BetVictor ahead of Newcastle United playing away at West Ham:
“I worry for West Ham, things don’t like right.
“I know those fans, I know how much they love that club and I know how passionate they are when things aren’t going well.
“Right now, the team looks miles off it and Nuno must be concerned that he doesn’t seem to have made much impact.
“Newcastle have been up and down, particularly on the road. I’ll never worry about this side getting results at home, but if they want to really challenge that top four race they’ll need more away wins.
“I think they get one here though. Brentford cruised it last Monday and I can see a similar sort of game.
“One to watch – Anthony Gordon’s looked more like himself of late. He’ll fancy a goal against a West Ham defence that’s hardly watertight.
“Prediction: West Ham 0 Newcastle 2”
My thoughts
I think Harry Redknapp has got most of that spot on.
His old club look in a total mess and after five weeks in the job for Nuno, there has been minimal ‘new manager bounce’ on show. In his first game in charge West Ham got a 1-1 draw at Everton, but since then, it has been three Premier League defeats with six goals conceded and only one scored.
It certainly doesn’t look like a case of a group of players who are just having a temporary blip. West Ham haven’t won a home match in over eight months and since October 2024, the Hammers have won three Premier League home games against Wolves, Fulham and Leicester.
West Ham have already had three different managers in 2025 and if Nuno doesn’t find some way to get this team picking up points, you wouldn’t rule out a fourth West Ham manager of 2025.
Harry Redknapp is correct when it comes to Newcastle needing to get more away wins if they want to finish in the top four. However, the first two PL away games saw Eddie Howe with a lot of obstacles to deal with, including have no available senior striker. Goalless draws against Villa and Leeds, were then followed by another at Bournemouth (another of Harry’s former clubs!), which was a very decent result considering the Cherries are now second in the table.
The defeat at Brighton came with a late goal for the home side when Newcastle were well on top and going for the winning goal themselves, caught on the break with a rare Seagulls attack.
The fact is that in the last six games in all competitions, that Brighton match is the only defeat for Newcastle, with Eddie Howe’s team having won the other five, the most recent of those against Spurs (another of Harry’s one-time clubs…) on Wednesday. In these five wins, Newcastle scoring 13 goals and conceding only one.
