On Saturday, 15 August 2026, the second matchday of the 2. Bundesliga took place. The 8:30 p.m. fixture was the big clash of the weekend: the Kaiserslautern–Karlsruhe derby. We were there — here is our experience!

Getting to the Fritz-Walter-Stadion with free public transport on matchday.

We travelled from Strasbourg and drove as far as Neustadt. Day-long parking is available for €6 in front of Neustadt (Weinstr) railway station. From there, numerous trains run to Kaiserslautern in around 25 minutes. Trains normally run every 30 minutes, increasing to every 15 minutes as kick-off approaches. You can check real-time timetables on the Deutsche Bahn app.

With a match ticket, public transport throughout the region is free. This train between Neustadt and Kaiserslautern is therefore free of charge on matchday.

Arriving at the stadium, club shop and food stands.

We arrived in Kaiserslautern 1.5 hours before kick-off. It takes around 20 minutes to walk uphill to the stadium. The Fritz-Walter-Stadion sits high above the city like a fortress, creating a very special atmosphere. It is also worth noting that the stadium hosted matches during the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Our ticket was purchased several weeks in advance through Kaiserslautern's online ticketing platform, which was reserved for club members. Our seat was right in the middle of the South Stand (side stand), and the ticket cost €45.

The concourses are indoors and sheltered, with a large number of food and drink stands. Despite the long queues, we were served in less than 10 minutes. The food options include traditional wursts and currywursts (white or red), fries, pizza slices and more. Drinks include Coca-Cola, Fanta, Mezzo Mix (a combination of Fanta and Coca-Cola), beer, sparkling wine and sparkling water. If you're visiting Germany, currywurst is definitely a must-try!

Incredible atmosphere, displays and pyrotechnics in the stands.

The Fritz-Walter-Stadion was sold out for the derby, with 49,327 spectators in attendance. The Karlsruhe supporters in the West Stand were equipped with red and white ponchos displaying "Nur der FCK". Each supporter in the stand also had sheets that, at the signal from the capo, were used to reveal a message aimed at the day's rivals.

In the away section, 4,720 Karlsruhe supporters made the trip. At kick-off, KSC fans put on a huge pyrotechnic display across their entire section, which was incredibly impressive.

Throughout the match, the atmosphere in the stands was electric, worthy of such a derby. On the pitch, it was a tight game that ended in a 0–0 draw.
