The 36-year-old has now officially become Chelsea’s fifth signing under new manager Xabi Alonso, following Marco Palestra, who signed from Italian club Atalanta, Morgan Rogers, who joined from Aston Villa, Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace and Danny Welbeck from Brighton and Hove Albion.

The England international will also be joined by Dastan Satpayev, Geovany Quenda, Valentino Barco and Emmanuel Emegha who signed on pre-agreed deals.

Henderson spent the majority of his career at Liverpool from 2011 to 2023, winning six major honours, including the Premier League and Champions League.

He returned to England by joining Brentford last summer after spells abroad with Dutch side Ajax and Saudi side Al Ettifaq.

Henderson will to bring much-needed experience to the Chelsea midfield, joining the likes of Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Dario Essugo, and Romeo Lavia.

Chelsea have also brought in another midfielder this summer in Argentina international Valentin Barco from Strasbourg.

Henderson made 32 Premier League appearances for Brentford last season, 22 of which were as a starter, and provided one goal and three assists in the competition.

The England international primarily plays in the number six position, albeit as a deep-lying playmaker rather than a traditional defensive midfielder.

On paper, Henderson’s play style should complement the likes of Caicedo, Fernandez, and Essugo, who thrive when given the freedom to roam the pitch.

Chelsea manager Alonso played in a similar role in his playing career, so this will be his area of expertise.

Jordan Henderson’s Chelsea transfer fee from Brentford

Henderson joined Chelsea as a free agent after the midfielder reached a mutual agreement with his previous club to terminate his contract early, so no transfer fees were involved.

Jordan Henderson’s Chelsea contract length

Henderson has signed a two-year contract with the Blues, tying him to the club until the summer of 2028.

When Jordan Henderson could make his first Chelsea appearance

Henderson recently underwent surgery for a broken left forearm after slipping while jumping over an advertising hoarding during England’s celebration after the win over Mexico in the 2026 World Cup.

While there is no official timeline for his return, he is not expected to be back on the pitch for weeks.

Therefore, it is unlikely that he will be involved in the remainder of Chelsea’s pre-season tour of Asia after they concluded their Australia leg against Spurs.
