Jürgen Klopp is set to succeed Julian Nagelsmann as head coach of the German national team. No agreement has been reached yet, but the change would be significant if he is appointed. The Bayern stars will also feel the impact.
There has been a lot of speculation recently about what the DFB squad of the future might look like under Klopp. The former coach of Liverpool FC and Borussia Dortmund has not yet commented specifically on the matter, only confirming that he is in talks with the association.
FC Bayern makes up a large contingent of the national team, and of course it will be very interesting to see how the changes under a new national team coach will affect the players of the record-breaking champions.
Hardly any player is likely to be reevaluated as clearly under Klopp as Joshua Kimmich. Although some experts called for the player’s retirement after the 2026 World Cup, he showed a fighting spirit. The TZ assumes that, should Klopp be named head coach, Kimmich will play in central midfield again.
That’s simply where he has the most influence on the German team’s play. He can dictate the pace, control the build-up, and set the rhythm. And above all, he won’t have to defend against fast wingers while struggling with his lack of speed.

There’s no question that Jonathan Tah will also play an important role in the defense under a national team coach like Klopp. Meanwhile, Nathaniel Brown, the new Bayern signing, could benefit from a more high-pressing approach and greater clarity in the defensive structure. Freedom to push forward, solid cover at the back: that would suit his style.
One player who didn’t perform well at the World Cup is Aleksandar Pavlovic. His role on the DFB team will depend largely on his development. If Kimmich is the starting defensive midfielder, the competition will be fierce with players like Felix Nmecha, Angelo Stiller, or Nadiem Amiri—provided the latter remains part of the DFB squad. Pavlovic needs to become even more consistent and impactful.
It’s safe to assume that Lennart Karl, who was already expected to play a major role at the World Cup, remains part of the DFB’s plans. Klopp, in his role as an expert for Magenta TV during the tournament, already showed himself to be a fan of the youngster and will challenge and nurture him.
Jamal Musiala is also expected to play an important role going forward; he needs a certain amount of freedom on the field, which Klopp could grant him. Tactical adjustments are definitely being considered and are a major topic of discussion. The extent to which this will affect Serge Gnabry, who has recently been injured, will become clear once everything is finalized and the first roster announcement for September is due.
